Chapter 9

The rhythmic sound of heavy boots echoed closer down the concrete stairwell, accompanied by the cold click of tactical flashlights cutting through the gloom of the archive. Marcus Vance’s commanding voice reverberated off the metal shelving units, demanding immediate compliance. Arthur didn't waste a single second hesitating. He slammed his body weight against the heavy steel shelving unit laden with scorched blueprints, throwing his shoulder into the metal until the anchors sheared from the wall with a deafening screech. The massive rack tipped backward, crashing into the adjacent shelves and creating a chaotic barricade of debris that blocked the main aisle.
"Through here, now!" Arthur shouted over the metallic din, gesturing frantically toward a narrow, grime-coated access door hidden behind the fallen shelving. Maya didn't hesitate. With her bare feet gripping the concrete, she darted past Arthur, slipping effortlessly through the half-open service tunnel door. Elena followed right behind her, her smartphone held high, capturing the blinding beam of security flashlights sweeping across the archive entrance as Marcus and his enforcers breached the primary barricade. The harsh glare illuminated swirling dust particles and the charred remains of Dr. Vance’s old workstation, turning the historic basement into a battleground of corporate survival.
Arthur grabbed a heavy fire extinguisher from the wall bracket, pulling the safety pin with his teeth just as the first corporate security guard vaulted over the fallen shelving unit. With a sweeping motion, Arthur unleashed a dense white cloud of chemical retardant directly into the intruder’s face, blinding the guard and sending him stumbling backward into his teammates. "Go! I'll hold them off!" Arthur yelled, slamming the heavy service door shut from the inside and throwing the massive steel locking bolt into place just as heavy fists began pounding furiously against the exterior metal.

Inside the damp, narrow service tunnel, the air was thick with the scent of stagnant water and rusted iron. A single overhead emergency bulb flickered a sickly yellow, casting long, fractured shadows along the concrete walls. Maya stood waiting a few yards down the tunnel, her gray hoodie blending into the gloom, holding the master USB drive tightly in her pocket. Elena panned her phone camera back toward the heavy door, her live stream capturing the muffled shouts of the security guards attempting to weld or force the lock from the other side. "We need to move, fast," Elena urged, grabbing Maya’s small shoulder gently to guide her down the descending slope of the drainage passage.
The tunnel sloped sharply downward toward the industrial canal, the distant sound of lapping water offering a faint beacon of hope in the suffocating darkness. Arthur’s heavy footsteps echoed behind them as he caught up, breathing heavily, his black tuxedo jacket now torn at the shoulder and stained with soot and white chemical powder. He had crossed a point of no return; by physically resisting the board’s enforcers, he had officially declared war on the very empire he had helped build. Together, the mismatched trio pressed forward into the underground labyrinth, racing against time to bring the truth to the surface before the corporate machine could silence them permanently.
