Chapter 13: Closing the Chapter

Saturday morning arrived with crisp autumn sunshine illuminating the suburbs. Clara and Mark drove past Suburban Drive just once, noting the discreet 'For Sale' sign planted firmly in the front yard beside the flowerbed. A couple of prospective buyers were standing near the front walk talking to the real estate agent. The driveway was empty of Sarah’s clutter, and the porch looked peaceful, restored to the dignity it had possessed when their mother was alive.

They didn't stop; they just watched it for a fleeting moment as they drove past toward the highway, acknowledging the closure of a painful chapter in their family history. They hadn't heard from Sarah or Aunt Linda since the eviction notice, and according to Mr. Vance, neither of them had attempted to contact the legal office further. The bluff of endless entitlement had collapsed the moment it met an immovable wall of boundaries and law.

"You know what the best part is?" Mark asked as they merged onto the interstate.

"What's that?" Clara asked, keeping her eyes on the road ahead.

"We finally learned how to put ourselves first without feeling guilty about it," Mark said, turning up the radio to a quiet, melodic tune that filled the car with warmth. "We spent years thinking love meant enduring abuse and financial drain. Now we know real love doesn't require self-destruction."

Clara smiled, the tension that had gripped her shoulders for a decade finally melting away completely. She thought of the blue document folder sitting in her apartment closet—now locked inside a metal box, its contents reduced to mere paperwork rather than sources of terror or obligation. The parasite was gone, the house was sold, and their lives were entirely their own again.
