Chapter 13: Facing the Interview Room

The glass doors of the downtown design agency slid open with a soft, pneumatic hiss, welcoming Clara into a sleek, modern lobby lined with exposed brick walls, polished concrete floors, and lush indoor plants. She wore a tailored navy blue blazer Sarah had helped her buy the day before, paired with simple black slacks and polished leather flats. Her blonde hair was styled in a neat, professional sweep, and her silver necklace was replaced by a small, elegant pendant.
She took a deep, steadying breath, letting the cool ambient air fill her lungs before stepping up to the reception desk.
“Hi, I’m Clara Evans. I have an eleven o'clock interview with Marcus Vance regarding the brand identity contract.”
The receptionist smiled warmly, handing her a visitor badge. “Welcome, Clara. Marcus is finishing up a call in conference room B. Have a seat right over there, and I’ll let him know you’ve arrived.”
Sitting on the minimalist Scandinavian sofa, Clara felt a familiar flutter of nerves in her stomach, but it was a good kind of nervousness—the sharp, focused adrenaline of someone stepping back into their true element. She pulled out her tablet to review her design notes one last time, refusing to let doubt creep into her mind. She thought of Lily’s brave green eyes and Noah’s peaceful breathing in his crib, using her children as an anchor of pure, unshakeable strength.
Ten minutes later, a tall man in his late forties with friendly graying temples and a warm smile walked out to greet her. “Clara? Marcus Vance. Great to finally meet you in person. Your portfolio blew our entire creative team away.”

As she stood up to shake his hand, Clara met his gaze with a steady, confident expression. “Thank you, Marcus. It’s a pleasure to be here. I’m really excited to walk you through my concepts.”
The interview lasted an hour. They discussed color theory, sustainable fashion trends, digital marketing layouts, and project timelines. Clara spoke with passion, clarity, and deep professional authority, drawing on her years of experience without a trace of hesitation. As Marcus walked her back to the lobby at the end of the meeting, he offered a firm handshake and a promising nod. “We have a few more candidates to talk to this week, Clara, but honestly, you set a very high bar. Expect to hear from us by Friday afternoon.”
