Chapter 8 - The Locked Room

Darkness slammed down like a physical blow as the heavy steel door locked shut, cutting off the dim hallway light entirely. Julian dropped the envelope, lunging forward with a desperate cry, slamming his fists and shoulders against the solid metal barrier.
“Open the door!” Julian shouted, his voice cracking with sudden, overwhelming panic. “Let me out!”
There was no answer from the corridor, only the muffled, mechanical hum of the building’s ventilation system kicking into a higher gear. Julian pressed his ear against the cold steel, listening for footsteps, but heard nothing over the frantic pounding of his own heart. He pulled out his smartphone to check the flashlight, but as the screen flickered once, the battery icon flashed red, and the display went completely black. Total, suffocating darkness enveloped him.
For a terrifying few seconds, the ghost of his childhood claustrophobia gripped his throat, making it nearly impossible to draw breath. He slid down the metal door until he hit the concrete floor, pulling his knees up to his chest in the freezing dark. He had walked right into a trap, manipulated by the scarred man at the pier who had used his thirst for vengeance against him. The Sterling family hadn't just defeated him; they had orchestrated his entire descent, steering him step-by-step into a cage from which there was no escape.
As his eyes slowly adjusted to the pitch-black environment, Julian noticed a faint, amber glow emanating from the far side of the storage unit. He crawled cautiously toward the metal table, his hands brushing against the cold surface until his fingers encountered the reel-to-reel tape recorder. Without thinking, he felt along the chassis until his thumb pressed against a raised plastic button.
Click.
The vintage machine whirred to life with a loud mechanical hum, magnetic tape squealing softly before a voice filled the tiny metal room. It wasn't the raspy voice of the scarred man from the pier. It was a smooth, crystal-clear digital recording of Eleanor Sterling herself.
“Predictable, desperate, and endlessly arrogant,” Eleanor’s recorded voice echoed softly through the confined space, dripping with aristocratic amusement. “Did you genuinely believe, Julian, that a multi-billion-dollar empire built over half a century could be dismantled by a disgruntled ghost in a trench coat? My security team intercepted you at Pier 54 the moment you stepped onto the boardwalk.”
Julian clenched his jaw so hard his teeth ached, listening in furious silence as the tape continued to roll.
“You were never a threat to us, Julian,” Eleanor continued, her tone turning ice-cold. “You were simply a convenient catalyst. Clara needed a clean, undeniable reason to break off the engagement in front of the entire board of directors without triggering shareholder panic. Your pathetic ambition provided that excuse on a silver platter. We merely gave you enough rope to hang yourself.”

The tape clicked off, but the machine kept spinning, emitting a low, rhythmic hiss in the dark. Suddenly, a sharp hissing sound hissed from the ceiling vents above Julian’s head, followed immediately by a heavy, sweet chemical odor that flooded the tiny room with terrifying speed.
