Chapter 9 - The Flashpoint

The white glare of the flash-bang grenade stripped away all color from the East Wing library, leaving only blinding light and a high-pitched ringing in Eleanor’s ears. Before her vision could fully recover, a massive shadow tackled Marcus Vance across the Persian rug, sending the silenced pistol skittering across the scorched floorboards.

Eleanor dropped to her knees, coughing as the smoke cleared just enough to reveal the struggling figures. It wasn’t a federal agent. It was the estate butler, Arthur, whose normally immaculate grey waistcoat was torn at the shoulder, revealing a heavily muscled forearm scarred with old combat tattoos.

“Get the document container, Miss Eleanor!” Arthur grunted, pinning Marcus’s arm behind his back with a ruthless, practiced submission hold. “Don't let him reach his secondary transmitter!”

Beatrice moved faster than her age suggested, diving across the floor to grab the titanium laptop case that Marcus had dropped near the window. She flipped open the lid, her fingers flying across the auxiliary override panel while Marcus thrashed violently beneath Arthur’s grip.

“You’re too late!” Marcus snarled, spitting blood onto the rug as Arthur pressed a knee harder into his spine. “The blockchain transfer is already at sixty percent! Once it hits one hundred, the Sterling estate belongs to the Zurich syndicate!”

Eleanor didn’t hesitate. She grabbed the charred remains of the vellum deed from the floor, shoved her hand into the smoldering safe cavity, and pulled out the emergency analog flash-memory drive that her grandfather had installed behind the mechanical gears in 1970—a failsafe system completely disconnected from the internet.

“You forgot one thing, Marcus,” Eleanor said, her voice shaking with adrenaline as she slammed the analog drive into the side port of Beatrice’s titanium laptop. “My grandfather didn’t trust digital blockchains. He trusted physical wire-loops.”

Beatrice gasped as the screen of the laptop flashed from red to a brilliant, steady emerald green. “The analog override! It’s locking out the Cayman servers!”

Marcus let out a roar of absolute fury, thrashing so hard he nearly threw Arthur off his balance. “You can’t override an immutable blockchain with an analog switch! It’ll corrupt the entire Vance corporate registry!”

“Exactly,” Eleanor said coldly, pressing the master execution key with a definitive, satisfying click. “If I can’t keep the empire, neither can you. I’m liquidating every subsidiary, shipping line, and shell corporation you own into a federal bankruptcy escrow account.”

The laptop screen flickered violently, displaying a cascading waterfall of red cancellation code as billions of dollars in illicit assets were instantly frozen across thirty-two international banks. Marcus stopped struggling entirely. His face went utterly pale, his eyes wide with a mixture of shock and sheer, unadulterated terror.

“You… you just destroyed the entire Vance syndicate,” Marcus whispered, staring at the glowing screen as if it were a ghost.

“No, Marcus,” Eleanor replied, standing up tall and looking down at her uncle with absolute, unyielding power. “I just balanced the ledger.”

Before Arthur could slap the heavy steel zip-ties around Marcus’s wrists, the heavy double doors of the library flew open, revealing three men in dark suits with federal badges drawn.

“Marcus Vance,” the lead agent announced, stepping over the shattered clockwork. “You are under arrest for international corporate sabotage and terrorism.”

As Marcus was hauled away into the smoky hallway, Beatrice looked at Eleanor, a slow, appreciative smile finally touching her lips. “Your grandfather would have been very proud of you, my dear.”
