Chapter 10: The Downtown Safe Deposit Box

The distant orange fireball blossomed against the dark horizon, sending a low, rumbling shockwave that rattled the corrugated metal walls of the storage facility. Claire stumbled slightly, catching her balance against the hood of her sedan as Agent Miller cursed under his breath and barked orders into his tactical radio, demanding a perimeter check from the local fire department.
The threat Vance had just barked out wasn't an empty bluff. If Mark had a contingency plan linked to a downtown safety deposit box, the explosion they had just witnessed wasn't an accident—it was a digital trigger designed to wipe out the physical evidence the moment federal intervention occurred.
"Miller, we have to get to the Federal Reserve branch downtown before Mark makes bail," Claire said urgently, stepping directly in front of the federal agent with renewed determination burning in her eyes. "If he activates that contingency, he won't just frame me for the embezzlement—he'll use Sophia as leverage to force me to take the fall for the entire municipal fraud."
Agent Miller stared at her for a long, calculating moment, weighing the risks of involving a civilian in a high-level federal asset seizure. He looked at the manila envelope still resting on the hood of the car, then down at the digital ledger glowing faintly on his tablet.
"Get in the passenger seat of my SUV, Mrs. Hayes," Miller ordered tersely, turning on his heel. "We have twenty minutes before Mark's court-appointed arraignment hearing finishes. If he posts bond, he'll head straight for that vault."
Ten minutes later, the unmarked federal SUV tore through the quiet downtown streets, its emergency strobe lights cutting a blinding path through the midnight fog. Claire sat rigidly in the front passenger seat, her hands clenched tightly in her lap as the towering limestone facade of the downtown Federal Reserve building loomed into view ahead. The plaza was entirely deserted, save for a single black sports car parked illegally right in front of the grand marble steps—Mark’s car.
Miller slammed the SUV into park, cutting the engine as he drew his service weapon once more.
"He's already inside," Miller whispered, signaling two tactical units approaching from the rear alleyway. "Stay behind me, Claire. This is federal territory now."
They slipped through the heavy glass side doors of the building, moving silently across the polished marble lobby. The night security guard was slumped unconscious over his desk, breathing heavily from a heavy sedative dart embedded in his neck. Miller checked his pulse, nodding grimly to confirm he was alive, before motioning toward the subterranean stairwell leading down to the private vault levels.
The heavy steel vault door at the bottom of the stairs stood half-open, a soft blue electronic glow emanating from within. As Claire and Miller crept closer down the concrete corridor, the low, angry sound of Mark’s voice echoed out from the vault chamber, speaking to someone through an encrypted satellite phone.
"I don't care about Vance, David!" Mark roared furiously from inside the vault. "The primary drive is wiped. I have the physical bearer bonds in my hand. If Claire tries to stop me from boarding the private flight to Zurich, I'll make sure she never sees her daughter again."
May you like
Claire froze at the threshold of the vault, her blood running cold as she realized Mark wasn't just planning to run—he was planning to kidnap Sophia all over again.
