Chapter 2

The sharp clatter of a heavy leather boot against the threshold shattered the heavy silence of the master bathroom. Officer Miller extended a hand toward Beatrice, his expression unreadable beneath the brim of his dark service cap. The metallic badge on his chest caught the amber glow of the vanity sconces, casting long, distorted shadows across the Italian marble floor.

"Step back, Miss," Miller repeated, his voice dropping into a measured, authoritative register designed to quell resistance without escalating into physical force. "Interfering with a lawful custody transfer is a misdemeanor. Continuing to obstruct will result in immediate detention."

Clara whimpered, her small fingers clutching desperately at the front of Beatrice’s shirt. The burn mark on her scalp pulsed a violent, angry crimson, a stark reminder of the casual cruelty that dictated life inside the mansion's gilded walls. Beatrice looked down at the child, her chest heaving as she fought to rein in the rising panic threatening to choke her words. She refused to let go. To release Clara now was to surrender her to an invisible, slow-motion destruction disguised as domestic order.

"Look at her head!" Beatrice demanded, turning her fierce gaze toward Grant, who stood impassively beside the officers. "She didn't just move. Eleanor waited until she flinched, and then she pressed down. I was standing right outside the door before you locked it, Grant. I heard everything."

Eleanor stepped forward, the heavy silk of her dark green wrap dress whispering against her ankles. She raised a manicured hand to adjust the diamond necklace at her throat, her movements infuriatingly deliberate. "The girl has an attention deficit," Eleanor said, her voice smooth and devoid of any genuine maternal concern. "She jerks violently whenever she is startled. It was an unfortunate accident during routine grooming. Beatrice is prone to hysteria. She has always been overly dramatic about household matters."

Grant nodded slowly, confirming his wife’s narrative with a subtle dip of his chin. "The nanny is dismissed," Grant said coldly, addressing the officers rather than Beatrice. "She was given her termination notice this morning due to insubordination. She broke into the private quarters just moments ago. Escort her off the property, please."

The second officer, a younger man named Davis, stepped past Grant and reached for Beatrice’s arm. His grip was firm, professional, but surprisingly gentle. "Come on, miss. Don't make this harder on yourself or the little girl."

Beatrice cast one final, agonizing glance at Clara. The little girl’s wide, tear-filled blue eyes seemed to plead for a miracle. As Davis pulled her gently toward the hallway, Beatrice whispered fiercely, "I'm not leaving you, Clara. I swear it."
