Chapter 7: The Interrogation Room

In the sterile, windowless confines of the local police precinct interrogation room, the hum of the fluorescent overhead fixture provided a low, droning soundtrack to the silence. Margaret Vance sat at the center of the scarred wooden table, her hands resting motionless on the surface. Her brown silk blouse, once a symbol of poised elegance, now looked rumpled and weary. Across from her sat Detective Thomas Vance—unrelated to the family, despite the shared name—flipping through a sheaf of printed transcripts and police incident reports.
""Mrs. Vance, let’s go over this one more time, carefully,"" Detective Thomas began, his voice devoid of hostility, carrying instead a heavy, analytical fatigue. ""According to your initial statement to the paramedic at the scene, and the corroborating video evidence recovered from your home’s pantry security system, you intentionally introduced a foreign pharmaceutical substance into your granddaughter's drink. Is that correct?""
Margaret kept her gaze fixed on a small scratch on the table. ""I didn't mean to hurt her,"" she muttered, her voice trembling slightly. ""Harper has been so high-strung lately. Running around, screaming, refusing to take naps. The noise was driving me insane. My husband left those pills behind years ago for his insomnia. I thought... I thought if I just gave her a tiny crush, she would drift off to sleep for a couple of hours. We could have peace.""
""Peace at the cost of a four-year-old child's life?"" Detective Thomas challenged gently, leaning forward. ""Mrs. Vance, do you understand the gravity of what you’ve done? That sedative, combined with her body weight and the concentration you used, nearly caused respiratory arrest. If the paramedic hadn't arrived when he did, and if your daughter-in-law hadn't checked the pantry feed, Harper would be dead.""
Margaret squeezed her eyes shut, a sharp sob finally escaping her lips. The armor of denial had completely shattered under the weight of the detective's words. She had spent decades managing her household with an iron fist, demanding perfection and quiet obedience from everyone around her. When modern family life proved too messy, too loud, and too resistant to her traditional control, she had resorted to a terrifying, desperate measure to restore order. Now, looking at the cold reality reflected in the detective's eyes, she realized she had destroyed everything she claimed to love in the pursuit of a manufactured tranquility.

Detective Thomas slid a formal written confession form across the table, along with a black ballpoint pen. ""Sign here, Margaret. It won't erase what happened, but honesty is the only path forward now. Your son is on his way to the station, and your daughter-in-law is currently praying for her child's survival at Saint Jude."" Margaret looked at the pen as if it were a venomous snake, her hand shaking uncontrollably as she picked it up to write her name.
