Chapter 3

Vanessa stared at the paper sliding across the table, her fingernails digging into the formica surface. The realization that her father's empire was crumbling under federal scrutiny hit her harder than the concrete floor of the holding cell. For her entire life, money had been the universal solvent, dissolving every mistake, every broken law, and every consequence. Without it, she was floating in deep, freezing water with no shore in sight.

"What do you mean, my father's money can't help?" Vanessa whispered, her voice cracking for the first time. "He owns half the banks in the state. He can buy an appeal. He can buy the governor!"

Marcus Vance shook his head slowly, leaning forward over the metal table. The harsh fluorescent light overhead flickered, casting long, jittery shadows across his tired face.

"The federal task force raided your father's corporate headquarters three hours after you were remanded," Marcus explained, his tone devoid of sympathy but heavy with professional gravity. "Every offshore account has been flagged. The judge didn't just sentence you on a whim, Vanessa. He had sealed federal indictments on your family's shell companies sitting right inside that brown file folder on his desk."

Vanessa felt the air leave her lungs. The brown file folder. She remembered the sound of it opening, the deliberate, unhurried way Judge Turner had rested his hand upon it. It wasn't just a traffic case. It was a trap designed to catch an entire dynasty built on corruption and exploitation.

"And that's not even the worst of it," Marcus continued, flipping a page in his portfolio to reveal a grainy photograph taken from a traffic camera two blocks away from the crash site. "The prosecution obtained enhanced footage from the night of the accident. You weren't driving alone, Vanessa."

Vanessa froze. Her eyes locked onto the black-and-white still image showing the passenger side of her sports car. A second figure was visible inside the vehicle, leaning over the console just moments before the airbags deployed.

"Who..." Vanessa swallowed hard, her throat feeling like sandpaper. "Who is that?"

"According to the license plate reader logs and cell tower pings, it was your cousin, Julian," Marcus said, watching her reaction like a hawk. "And according to the black box data recovered from your car, Julian wasn't just a passenger. He was the one who grabbed the steering wheel to swerve away from a police cruiser, directly into Maya Henderson."

Before Vanessa could process the staggering implication—that her favorite cousin had caused the crash and let her take the fall—the heavy steel door behind her unlocked with a loud buzzer. Two guards stepped into the booth, grabbing her by the elbows.

"Time's up, counselor," the lead guard grunted, hauling Vanessa to her feet. "Transfer order just came through. She's being moved to maximum security."

Marcus stood up abruptly, holding out a warning hand. "Wait, you can't transfer her without a hearing! Her legal team—"

"Her legal team just fired your father," the guard interrupted coldly, shoving Vanessa toward the exit. "Move it, Whitfield."
