Chapter 2 - The Warrant

The harsh light of the kitchen flickered overhead, casting long, menacing shadows across the floor where Toby still sat chained to the wooden pillar. Elena lowered her phone slowly, the emergency dispatcher’s voice humming distantly from the speaker before she abruptly cut the call. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird.
"There's been a mistake," Elena stammered, her gaze darting between the two police officers and her mother-in-law. "Look at my son! He's the victim here. That woman tied him up!"
"No mistake, ma'am," the lead officer, a tall man with a stern jaw named Sergeant Vance, said calmly. He stepped past David without hesitation and held out a folded document. "Elena Miller, you are named in a court order issued by Judge Harrison. You lost custody of this child six months ago due to documented severe psychiatric instability."
David stood frozen in the corner, his hands shoved deep into the pockets of his khaki pants. He didn't meet Elena's eyes. He didn't defend her. He just stared at the linoleum floor with a chilling, detached indifference that told Elena everything she needed to know.
"David, tell them!" Elena cried out, lunging toward her husband before Vance gently grabbed her arm to restrain her. "Tell them this is a lie! You said we were visiting your mother for a family dinner. You said Toby was missing us!"
"You're unwell, Elena," David said softly, his voice devoid of any genuine emotion. It sounded rehearsed, like a line in a play he had practiced dozens of times. "Mother and I tried to help you, but you wouldn't take your medication. You hallucinated things that weren't there. You became a danger to Toby."
Martha nodded sympathetically, resting a wrinkled hand on David’s shoulder. "It breaks my heart, officer," Martha said, her voice dripping with false sorrow. "She chased me around the house with a knife last year. We had to restrain the boy for his own protection because Elena kept trying to give him toxic herbs."
"That is an absolute lie!" Elena shrieked, struggling against the officer's grip. She looked desperately at the second officer, a younger woman with kind eyes. "Please, look around! There is a dog bowl on the floor! A child is chained by his neck! How can you believe them?"
The young officer hesitated, glancing down at the heavy steel chain and the rusted padlock securing it to the timber. She took a step toward Toby, but Martha immediately shifted her body, blocking the path with a terrifying calmness.
"The boy has severe psychological episodes," Martha explained smoothly. "He inflicts self-harm. The chain is a medical apparatus approved by our family physician."
Sergeant Vance looked at Elena with pity, misinterpreting her anguish for delusion. "Ma'am, we have to take you in for violating the custody restraining order. We will call child protective services to evaluate the living conditions, but you are coming with us right now."

As Vance clicked the cold steel handcuffs around Elena's wrists, the metal bit sharply into her skin. She took one last desperate look at her son, whose small mouth finally moved, whispering a single word that shattered her soul completely.
