Chapter 15: Grace Beneath the Stars

The night of the harvest banquet concluded with a gentle, falling snow that blanketed the city in a pristine, shimmering white hush. Mark and Leo drove back up the winding gravel road toward their home on the edge of the pine forest, the heater humming softly in the cab of the truck while Buster curled up soundly on the floorboards. When they pulled into the circular driveway, the modern glass-and-stone house radiated a warm, golden glow from every window, welcoming them home like a beacon of everlasting peace. They stepped out onto the wide wooden porch, breathing in the crisp, clean scent of winter pine and freshly fallen snow. Leo walked to the edge of the railing, resting his small hands on the frosted wood, and looked up into the vast, infinite sky where the stars burned with diamond-sharp brilliance. He thought about the ragged grey sweater he used to wear, the closed curtains on Elmwood Terrace, the green mesh bag by the roadside, and the incredible journey that had brought him to this exact moment in time.

Mark stepped up beside his son, wrapping a warm woolen blanket around both of their shoulders and pulling Leo close against his side. Neither of them spoke for a long time, letting the sacred silence of the winter night wash over them. They didn't need words to express what they both felt in their souls—a profound, unending gratitude for a second chance at life, for the safety of a real home, and for the mysterious workings of grace that always seemed to find the brokenhearted when they needed it most. Leo closed his eyes, his messy light brown hair catching the pale moonlight, and whispered softly into the freezing air, his voice carrying the pure, unadulterated echo of a thankful heart: "Thank you, Jesus, you changed our lives." Mark kissed the top of his son's head, whispering a silent amen as the falling snowflakes danced gently around them, sealing their miraculous story in eternal warmth and light.
