Chapter 8: The Confrontation in the Rain

The rain poured down in sheets, plastering Arthur’s hair to his forehead and turning the pavement beneath his polished shoes into a slick mire. Henderson stood squarely in his path, flanked by the two heavy-set men who had dropped the wooden crate with a heavy thud. The neighborhood around them seemed to hold its breath; windows cracked open a fraction of an inch across the street, quickly slamming shut as residents realized trouble had arrived.

"Where are they, Henderson?" Arthur demanded, his voice cutting sharply through the roar of the downpour. "Where is Clara and Lily?"

Henderson chuckled darkly, wiping a stray drop of water from his cheek with the back of a thick, scarred hand. "Relax, counselor. We’re just helping them relocate. Management decided that building safety codes required an immediate, unscheduled evacuation. Very tragic, really. Faulty wiring, you know how these old tenements are."

Arthur didn't waste another breath. He surged forward with a sudden, explosive burst of speed that caught Henderson completely off guard. Before the fixer could raise his fists, Arthur drove his shoulder squarely into Henderson’s chest, sending the larger man staggering backward into the side of the idling SUV with a metallic crunch. The two henchmen dropped their gear and rushed forward to pull Arthur off their boss, but Arthur anticipated the move. He ducked low, swept the legs of the first assailant, sending him crashing hard onto the wet asphalt, and threw an elbow back that caught the second man squarely in the jaw.

It wasn't a fair fight, and Arthur was no street brawler, but desperation fueled every strike. However, numbers eventually won out. As Henderson recovered his balance, wiping blood from his split lip, he lunged forward, grabbing Arthur by the lapels of his ruined suit and slamming him against the brick wall of the tenement.

"You think you’re smart, don't you?" Henderson snarled, spitting blood onto the pavement. "You think a few spreadsheets are going to bring down a billion-dollar empire? They’re already gone, Vance. Taken care of."

"If you hurt them, Henderson, I swear to God I will bury you alongside Sterling," Arthur rasped, struggling against the heavy grip holding him against the wall.

Before Henderson could retaliate, the wail of approaching sirens shattered the night air. Red and blue lights flashed wildly across the wet brickwork, painting the alley in urgent, pulsing tones. A marked squad car rounded the corner, tires screeching as it pulled up directly behind Arthur’s sedan, doors flying open before the vehicle had even come to a complete stop. Two uniformed officers leaped out, hands resting on their holstered sidearms, eyes darting across the chaotic scene.

Henderson’s grip on Arthur’s jacket slackened instantly. He forced a twisted, professional smile onto his bruised face, smoothing his jacket with one hand as the police approached.

"Officer, thank goodness," Henderson said smoothly, projecting an aura of aggrieved innocence. "This man attacked us unprovoked. We’re private contractors performing a legal tenant relocation, and he came out of nowhere like a lunatic."

Arthur pushed himself off the brick wall, wiping rain and blood from his cheek. "He’s lying! They’re kidnapping witnesses related to a federal fraud investigation against Apex Capital!"

The lead officer looked between Arthur’s ruined designer suit, Henderson’s split lip, and the abandoned crates on the pavement. He pulled out his notepad, his expression strictly neutral. "Everybody up against the cruiser. Right now. We’re sorting this out at the precinct."
