Chapter 14: The Final Run for the Highway

The heavy motorcycle roared to life on the third kick, its engine tearing through the silent forest as Jack wrenched the throttle open. Caleb was wedged precariously across the front tank and handlebars, semiconscious and groaning in pain, while Lily clung desperately to Jack’s back once more, wrapping her small arms around his waist and pressing Toby’s blanketed form tightly against his spine.

"Hold on!" Jack yelled, dumping the clutch and spinning the rear tire through a drift of loose snow as they rocketed out of the blackberry thicket onto the main logging trail.

Behind them, the dark sedan’s headlights suddenly flared to life, illuminating the snow-choked road as the enforcers scrambled back into their vehicle in hot pursuit. The powerful engine of the sedan whined loudly as it accelerated over the uneven terrain, its tires throwing up gouts of frozen slush and gravel that rained down through the pine branches.

Jack didn't look back. He rode with a reckless, calculated precision born of years on the asphalt, steering the heavy touring bike around hairpin turns, sliding across patches of black ice without losing control, and utilizing every shadow of the dense forest to break the sedan’s line of sight.

The access road narrowed as it approached the highway, flanked by steep embankments on either side. The sedan was gaining on them, its front bumper weaving dangerously close to Jack’s rear tire, attempting to clip the bike and send them sliding off the embankment into the ravine below.

"Hang on, Lily! Lean right!" Jack shouted over the roar of the wind and engines.

As they hit the final straightaway leading out to the highway service station, Jack didn't brake. Instead, he slammed down through the gears, letting the heavy motorcycle’s engine scream as it surged forward past the wire gate. The sedan lunged forward to ram them, but Jack swerved violently toward the shoulder, clipping a snowbank and using the momentum to spin the bike ninety degrees onto the paved highway just as the flashing red and blue lights of two state police cruisers appeared on the horizon, racing toward them with sirens wailing.

The dark sedan slammed on its brakes, skidding sideways across the icy pavement before executing a reckless U-turn and vanishing back into the dark mouth of the logging road, desperate to escape the approaching law enforcement vehicles.

Jack cut the throttle, letting the motorcycle coast to a smooth stop on the clear asphalt right beneath the comforting amber glow of the sodium streetlamp where this midnight journey had begun.
