Chapter 8: The Boardroom Coup

Monday morning arrived with a heavy, slate-gray sky that threatened freezing rain. Inside the towering glass-and-steel headquarters of Vance Holdings downtown, Julian sat at the head of the polished obsidian boardroom table. Around him sat seven senior board directors, all handpicked by Beatrice over the decades to rubber-stamp her decrees. At the far end of the table sat Beatrice herself, resplendent in a charcoal Chanel suit, her silver hair immaculate, sipping black coffee from a porcelain cup as if she were presiding over a minor execution.
"Gentlemen," Beatrice began, her voice carrying across the silent room with effortless authority. "We are here to discuss an emergency restructuring of executive leadership. Due to recent personal distractions and grave breaches of fiduciary discretion, Julian Vance is no longer fit to manage the operational portfolio of this enterprise." She slid a thick packet of documents across the table toward the lead director. "I propose an immediate vote of no confidence and his removal from the board effective immediately."
Julian did not flinch. He did not open his portfolio or reach for his phone. He simply sat back in his ergonomic leather chair, interlocking his fingers over his lap. "You might want to check the addendum on page fourteen, Beatrice," Julian said evenly, his voice cutting through the tense atmosphere. Beatrice frowned, signaling her lawyer to inspect the document. The lawyer flipped the pages rapidly, his eyes widening behind his wire-rimmed glasses as he read the small-print amendments attached to the corporate charter.
"This... this is impossible," the lawyer stammered, looking up at Beatrice in sheer panic. "The historical trust... it was signed thirty years ago by your late husband." Julian leaned forward, resting his forearms on the polished table. "My late father-in-law anticipated your tyranny, Beatrice. He established a dormant clause stipulating that if any direct heir was proven to be intentionally disinherited or concealed through fraudulent medical records by a sitting board member, that member’s voting shares automatically revert to the undiscovered heir in trust."

Beatrice slammed her coffee cup down onto the saucer, the porcelain shattering into shards. Her face flushed a mottled crimson beneath her powder. "That is an archaic, legally unenforceable trap!" she hissed, standing up from her chair with surprising agility for her age. "A dead man’s ghost cannot dictate the future of this empire!" Julian stood up to meet her gaze, towering over her with cold, immovable resolve. "The courts validated the papers this morning at nine o'clock, Beatrice. Valentina Vance is now the majority stakeholder of Vance Holdings, and as her legal guardians, Eleanor and I exercise her proxy."
The silence in the boardroom was absolute. The directors looked at one another in stunned disbelief, realizing in a single heartbeat that the crown had shifted heads. Beatrice grabbed her silver-headed cane, her hands trembling violently with suppressed rage. She glared at Julian with pure venom before turning on her heel and storming out of the boardroom, the heavy oak doors slamming shut behind her like a guillotine falling on an era.
