Chapter 2 - The Signature Line

Julian’s eyes darted from Clara’s steady, mocking smirk down to her manicured fingers resting securely over the leather folder. The ambient hum of the crowded restaurant seemed to vanish, replaced by the heavy, rhythmic thumping of blood in his ears. He straightened up slowly, his dark suit jacket pulling tight across his rigid shoulders.
“What are you talking about?” Julian demanded, his voice dropping an octave as he fought to regain a shred of his usual corporate authority. “I booked this table under my primary executive profile. The concierge knows me. The reservation belongs to Sterling Enterprises.”
Clara tilted her head slightly, her long red hair shifting over her shoulder. She did not remove her hand from the bill. Instead, she tapped her index finger twice against the leather surface, a slow, deliberate rhythm that drove Julian to the edge of his patience.
“Sterling Enterprises was dissolved by federal order seventy-two hours ago, Julian,” Clara said, her tone devoid of any mockery now, replaced by a terrifying, flat certainty. “Your corporate profile was flagged for asset misappropriation last Tuesday. Didn’t your chief financial officer mention that little detail before he stopped returning your phone calls?”
Julian stumbled back half a step, colliding lightly with the mahogany back of an empty chair. “That’s impossible. Marcus told me the restructure was approved. He said we had until the end of the quarter to liquidate the secondary holdings.”
“Marcus is currently sitting in a federal holding facility in Queens,” Clara replied smoothly. She lifted her hand just enough to reveal the bottom edge of the merchant receipt, where a neat signature was scrawled in bold, unfamiliar blue ink. “And the person who authorized this dinner tonight—and every single transaction on your primary card for the past six months—isn’t you.”
Julian stared at the handwriting. It wasn’t his signature. It wasn’t even an attempt at forgery. It was a clean, precise corporate seal that belonged to a holding company he had never heard of before in his life.
“Who authorized this?” Julian whispered, his throat tightening painfully.

Clara slid the leather folder entirely across the table toward him, her smirk returning with full force. “Open it, Julian. Read the name of your new employer.”
