Chapter 2 - The Cold Metal of Authority

The heavy metallic click of the revolver’s hammer pulling back echoed sharply off the pristine white marble countertops of the luxury kitchen. Arthur Vance stood towering in the doorway, his dark wool coat brushing against the doorframe like the wing of a predatory bird. His expression remained utterly unreadable, a mask carved from cold stone that revealed nothing of the boiling fury beneath. Clara immediately dropped her grip on Elena’s arm, stepping back half a pace while smoothing the front of her cream satin shirt with trembling fingers. She cast a sidelong, calculating glance at her husband, silently measuring how much of her desperate lie he had truly swallowed.
“Arthur, don't just stand there pointing that thing,” Clara hissed, pitching her voice into a frantic, high-pitched register meant to mimic a panicked mother. “Look at her face. Look at what she did to the kitchen. She’s unhinged. She’s been stealing from the safe for weeks, and now she’s hiding Chloe’s medicine just to blackmail us for severance pay.”
Elena pressed her bruised back harder against the pantry door, her chest heaving as she stared down the barrel of the gun. The purple-blue contusion on her forehead throbbed in time with her racing pulse. She swallowed hard, tasting the metallic tang of blood on her split lip.
“He’s lying,” Elena gasped, her voice cracking as she pointed a trembling, dirt-smudged finger toward the blue asthma inhaler resting innocently on the cold marble counter. “Mr. Vance, your daughter is upstairs suffocating because she locked the cabinet. I found the hidden ledger under the floorboards. I know about the insurance policy on little Chloe. I know why you both needed the girl out of the way.”
Arthur’s gray eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. He did not lower the weapon by a fraction of an inch. Instead, he took two slow, deliberate steps forward, the rubber soles of his polished shoes making a soft scraping sound against the tiled floor.
“You talk too much for a domestic, Elena,” Arthur murmured, his voice chillingly calm, devoid of any paternal panic. “A girl in your position should learn that curiosity is a fatal flaw in this household.”

Before Elena could lunge for the antique gold keys still dangling from the hook, Arthur shifted his weight and swung the heavy butt of the revolver downward, striking Elena squarely across her already battered temple with brutal, calculated force.
Elena let out a sharp, breathless cry as her knees buckled instantly beneath her. The world spun violently into a blur of swirling black and white tiles. As she slumped sideways against the pantry door, sliding down until her shoulder hit the cold floor, her vision tunneled. Through the haze of the fading light, she watched in silent horror as Arthur reached past her motionless body, his gloved fingers wrapping firmly not around the keys, but around the blue plastic asthma inhaler. He shoved the life-saving device deep into his dark coat pocket, turned his back on his gasping daughter upstairs, and deliberately clicked the kitchen deadbolt shut from the inside.
