Chapter 4: The Shared Secret

Nurse Clara finally found her voice from the corner, trembling as she clutched her clipboard to her chest like a shield. “Mr. Sterling… Mr. Vance… please. The hospital administration cannot afford a scandal of this magnitude. If security reviews the hallway cameras, we’ll all be facing criminal charges for attempted abduction under false medical pretexts.”
Vance turned slowly, his dark eyes fixing on the nurse. The intimidation in his posture made Clara shrink back another inch. “There won't be any security footage, nurse. Your system’s hard drive in the basement office just suffered a very unfortunate power surge about three minutes before I walked through those doors. Isn’t that right?”
Clara swallowed hard, her eyes widening in realization. She understood instantly that Vance wasn't just a grieving father acting on impulse; he was a methodical tactician who had planned every second of this rescue operation. She gave a stiff, terrified nod, falling in line with the new reality of the room.
Richard let out a dry, humorless chuckle, shaking his head. “You think you’ve won, Vance? You think taking the baby back to Elena solves anything? The debt collectors are already circling. Your construction business is three weeks away from complete bankruptcy. Without Sterling capital, you’ll lose your home, your trucks, everything. That’s why you agreed to the adoption payout in the first place.”
Julian whipped his head around to look at Vance, shock registering clearly on his face. “You agreed to it? Marcus, is that true?”
Vance’s jaw tightened, a muscle ticking violently in his cheek. He looked away from Julian, his gaze dropping to the floor before coming back up to meet the young man’s questioning eyes. “I was cornered, Julian. They froze my business accounts last Tuesday. Tax liens out of nowhere. Every single asset tied up by federal injunctions orchestrated by your father’s legal team. They offered me a choice: sign the adoption papers and walk away with enough cash to clear the debt, or watch everything I’ve built over the last ten years get auctioned off to the highest bidder.”

“And you were going to trade your own child?” Julian whispered, the betrayal stinging sharply.
“Not my child,” Vance said fiercely, stepping away from the bassinet to close the distance between them. “Our child. Elena’s and mine. I signed under duress, Julian. They threatened to lock me away on a parole violation if I didn't comply by midnight. But the moment I found out Elena never agreed to it—that they lied to her while she was unconscious—the deal was dead. I’d rather live in a cardboard box than sell a piece of my wife’s heart.”
