Chapter 14 - The Final Echo

The sharp, metallic click of a hammer being pulled back on a heavy-caliber firearm cut through the steady roar of the rain like a razor blade.
Director Hayes froze, her hand hovering over her coat pocket. The two federal agents instantly drew their sidearms, pivoting their bodies to form a defensive wall around the transport van where Lily lay resting under the warm woolen blanket. Miller shoved Leo behind his own broad frame, drawing his pistol with lightning speed and aiming toward the dark shadows beneath the collapsed passenger loading dock.
"Drop it, Vance!" Miller bellowed over the sound of the pouring rain.
From the deep darkness beneath the rusted steel girders stepped Dr. Aris Vance. The aging underground doctor looked battered, his butcher's apron stained with fresh dark crimson, a bloody bandage wrapped tightly around his left forearm. In his right hand, he held a heavy-duty tactical shotgun, its barrel pointed steadily—not at Miller or the federal agents—but directly at the open rear doors of the transport van where Lily was resting.
"Aris, what the hell are you doing?" Miller shouted, his voice laced with absolute betrayal. "You helped them get this far! Why throw it all away now?"
"You don't understand, Miller," Vance rasped, his voice shaking with a terrifying mixture of exhaustion, fever, and absolute desperation. The rain plastered his gray hair to his forehead, making him look like a drowned ghost. "The syndicate didn't just want their money back. They wanted the entire board wiped clean. And Hayes—she’s not here to protect these kids. She’s here to bury the evidence permanently."
Director Hayes didn't flinch, her face remaining cold and impassive as she looked at the armed doctor. "Put the gun down, Vance. You're out of your depth. You're a back-alley butcher who interfered in a federal counter-intelligence operation."
"A federal operation?" Vance laughed bitterly, coughing as a spray of blood misted the wet air. "You're going to pin this whole thing on a dead driver and two orphans to protect your own superiors in the Justice Department! The moment those kids step into a federal safehouse, they become loose ends just like the D.A.!"
Leo’s blood ran cold. He peered around Miller's shoulder, his eyes locking onto Director Hayes. The cold calculation in her blue eyes didn't look like a savior anymore; it looked like the exact same look the man in the suit had given them in the maintenance tunnel.
"Is that true?" Leo demanded, his voice cracking with a fierce, burning fury that overshadowed his exhaustion. "Are you going to hurt my sister?"
"Leo, don't listen to him," Miller urged, keeping his gun trained on Vance while casting a worried glance toward the federal director. "Hayes, lower your weapon. We have the flash drive. The whole city knows we have it."
"Nobody knows anything until the secure server confirms the upload, Miller," Hayes said smoothly, her hand finally sliding into her coat pocket, her fingers wrapping around the grip of a hidden weapon. "And right now, the signal from this terminal is being jammed by a federal cruiser three miles out. Convenient, isn't it?"
Before Miller could react, Vance squeezed the trigger of his shotgun—not firing at the van, but blasting the overhead junction box of the terminal's emergency lighting system.
