Chapter 9

Clara and Marcus spent the rest of Wednesday evening huddled over a kitchen table littered with legal documents, grant agreements, and copyright filings. The university’s aggressive legal maneuver was a calculated gamble: they were betting that two recent graduates with limited financial resources would be unable to afford the protracted legal battle required to contest intellectual property claims against a multi-million-dollar endowment fund.

"They think we’ll fold under the legal pressure," Marcus said, rubbing his tired eyes as he stared at a dense clause in their student researcher contracts. "They have a battalion of corporate attorneys on retainer. We have a rented apartment and a federal subpoena."

Clara shook her head, her mind rapidly calculating their options. "Not quite. We have something they desperately need: complete, unblemished control of the raw experimental data sets and the cryptographic verification keys. Without our private keys, the university's patent applications for the secondary compounds are legally unverifiable. If they try to patent our work without our verified signatures, they are committing federal patent fraud—which is a felony."

She stood up and walked over to her desk, unlocking a small fireproof lockbox. From inside, she retrieved a backup hardware token—a physical cryptographic device entirely disconnected from any internet connection, containing the verifiable digital hashes of every legitimate experiment she and Marcus had conducted over the past three years.

"We don't need to fight them in a traditional courtroom," Clara said, her voice dropping into a calm, strategic register. "We take our evidence directly to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and the National Institutes of Health ethics board, preemptively filing priority declarations that establish our independent authorship before the university's corporate lawyers can weaponize their administrative audit."

Marcus looked up at her, a slow, appreciative grin spreading across his face. "You’ve been planning this contingency since the day Julian tried to shut you down, haven't you?"

"When you deal with someone like Julian Sterling for four years, you learn to anticipate every dirty trick in the institutional playbook," Clara replied with a slight smirk.

The next morning, accompanied by Special Agent Miller—whose presence provided a protective buffer against university intimidation tactics—Clara and Marcus walked into the federal regional office to formally file their intellectual property decoupling declarations. The federal prosecutors, realizing that the university’s board of trustees was attempting to obstruct justice and misappropriate federal grant assets, immediately issued a federal preservation order freezing all university patent filings related to the disputed laboratory.

When the board of trustees received notification of the federal asset freeze late Thursday afternoon, their aggressive legal strategy collapsed like a house of cards. The university’s attempts to silence Clara Vance had not only failed spectacularly; they had triggered a comprehensive federal intervention that threatened to dismantle the institution's administrative leadership from top to bottom.
