The gray light of early dawn began to filter through the concrete canyons of the city, chasing away the dark shadows of the alley and casting a pale, cold illumination over the small group gathered behind the Grand Plaza Hotel. The wedding banquet was long over, its wealthy guests having departed hours ago amidst whispers of a sudden, mysterious family emergency that had abruptly ended the celebration. Inside the warm, quiet confines of the private study upstairs, the heavy oak door remained unlocked. Arthur sat alone at the mahogany desk, his black tuxedo rumpled and stained, staring blankly at a blank legal pad. His empire, built on aggressive acquisitions and buried secrets, was already beginning to dissolve as Clara’s lawyers mobilized financial audits and asset freezes across his corporate holdings.
