Chapter 11

Saturday arrived with a steady, grey drizzle that blurred the city skyline. Jennifer welcomed the quiet. She spent the morning organizing her home office, filing away old tax documents, and setting up a long-term investment plan that was entirely secure, transparent, and built on her own earnings.

Around noon, she walked to the neighborhood farmers market beneath a large black umbrella, purchasing fresh vegetables, artisan bread, and a small bouquet of yellow chrysanthemums to brighten the kitchen island.

As she walked home, she passed a neighborhood café where people sat behind fogged glass windows, laughing over steaming mugs of coffee. A few months ago, she would have been sitting in a similar venue, playing her assigned role in Marcus’s elaborate social theater, constantly checking her phone to ensure no new disaster had breached their fragile facade.

Now, she felt an absolute lightness in her step. The rain tapped rhythmically against her umbrella, a soothing percussion of renewal.

When she unlocked the door to the townhouse, the aroma of fresh cedar and clean linen welcomed her. She arranged the chrysanthemums in a simple glass vase, placed the groceries on the kitchen counter, and spent the afternoon reading a dense financial biography she had been meaning to tackle for months.

There was no phone buzzing with panic. No urgent knocks on the door. No fabricated emergencies requiring her emotional and financial rescue. There was only the steady, beautiful hum of a life reclaimed.
