Chapter 10 - The Second Knock

The heavy, hurried thud of boots pounding up the front steps echoed loudly through the quiet house, shattering the fragile tension in the dining room. Elizabeth froze, her dark hair clinging to her damp neck as she gripped the edge of the buffet table. The amber light of the chandelier flickered slightly, casting erratic shadows across the ruined birthday cake and the scattered legal documents.

Agent Miller instantly dropped the court transcript he was holding, his hand snapping to his holster as he spun around to face the hallway threshold.

“Stay back from the doorway,” Agent Miller commanded, his voice dropping into a sharp, tactical register. He unclipped his radio from his belt, thumbing the activation switch. “This is Agent Miller, requesting immediate backup at the residential sector—we have an unverified breach at the primary entryway.”

Before the dispatcher could respond over the static, the front door downstairs groaned under a heavy impact, followed by the sound of splintering wood. Someone was forcing entry into the house without waiting for an answer.

David let out a sharp gasp of pure terror, stumbling backward until his spine hit the china cabinet. The clean-cut young man in the light blue shirt looked completely unhinged, his eyes darting frantically toward the windows as if contemplating jumping out into the dark yard.

“Is it the feds?” David stammered, his voice climbing an octave. “Did you call more agents, Miller? What’s happening downstairs?”

“That’s not federal backup,” Arthur said, his voice unusually grim as he stepped in front of Martha, shielding her with his dark jacket. Arthur’s gray eyes narrowed as he listened to the heavy footsteps rushing up the curved staircase toward the second-floor landing. “Federal agents don't kick residential front doors off their hinges unless they're executing a high-risk warrant with a local SWAT attachment. And this isn't a SWAT team.”

Julian uncrossed his arms, his body tensing like a coiled spring. He didn't look scared; instead, a dangerous, hardened edge crept into his posture. He glanced toward the dark hallway, his jaw clenching tightly.

“If it’s not the feds,” Julian muttered darkly, “then it’s the people Uncle Richard hired to tie up loose ends when I started digging through the municipal archives last month.”

Martha slowly pushed herself away from the head of the table, her blue button-down shirt rustling as she straightened to her full height. Despite her age and the devastating revelations of the past hour, the steel in her spine returned. She looked at Julian, then at Elizabeth, her pearl earrings catching the harsh light.

“Nobody is touching my family,” Martha declared, her voice ringing with an ironclad resolve that silenced the panic in the room.

Before anyone could move toward the door, heavy footsteps reached the top of the landing. The hallway outside the dining room went dead silent for a fraction of a second. Then, a tall, broad-shouldered man in a dark trench coat stepped casually into the doorway, holding a sleek black briefcase in one hand and a silenced firearm pointed downward in the other.

Elizabeth screamed, her hands flying to cover her face as she pressed herself flat against the buffet table.

The man in the trench coat didn't look at Elizabeth, nor did he look at Martha or Agent Miller. His cold, calculating eyes locked immediately onto Juli
