Chapter 6: The Weight of Confessions

The silence that followed Victoria’s declaration was heavy enough to crush bone. Evelyn slowly stood up from the sofa, letting the wool blanket pool at her feet. Despite the bruise on her cheek and the lingering soreness in her limbs, her posture was straight, her chin held high with a quiet, dignified resolve that made Victoria’s theatrical fury look small and pathetic.
“You can keep the title, Victoria,” Evelyn said, her voice calm and clear, cutting through the penthouse air with surgical precision. “You can keep the penthouse, the stocks, and the name. I didn't come back here tonight because I wanted Julian back. And he didn't pull me off that floor because he wanted to restart a marriage that died six months ago.”
Victoria narrowed her eyes, instantly suspicious. “Then why create a legal crisis in front of hundreds of witnesses? Why pull out unfiled papers?”
“Because,” Julian interjected, turning his head slightly toward Evelyn before looking back at his current wife, “Evelyn was in danger. Thomas Sterling is laundering money through his accounts, and he uses people as leverage. If she wasn't legally tied to me, Thomas would have used her as a scapegoat for his federal indictment. The clerical error was the only thing standing between her and a prison cell.”
Victoria’s jaw went slack. The anger on her face curdled into absolute confusion and rising dread. “An indictment? What are you talking about?”
“Thomas Sterling isn't just a high-society playboy,” Evelyn explained, taking a step forward into the light. “He’s the primary front man for the offshore accounts that have been draining Vance Enterprises accounts for the last eight months. He hit me tonight because I found the ledger on his desk. He thought if he broke me, I’d keep my mouth shut.”
Victoria staggered back a half-step, the sheer magnitude of the corporate espionage crashing over her. Her father sat on the board of directors; her entire lifestyle was funded by the very company Thomas Sterling was systematically bleeding dry. “That’s... that’s impossible. Thomas is an investor. He’s part of our social circle.”
“Thomas is a thief,” Julian stated flatly. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, encrypted flash drive, tossing it carelessly onto the glass coffee table. “Everything is on there. Bank transfers, shell company registrations, and the physical receipts signed by Thomas’s own hand. I had our forensic accountants pull it three days ago. That’s why I was late to the gala tonight. I was waiting for the federal marshals to secure the warrants.”
Victoria looked from Julian to the flash drive, then back to Evelyn. The realization that she had been used as a pawn in a much larger, darker game drained all the remaining defiance from her posture. Her white designer dress suddenly felt less like armor and more like a shroud.

“You used the divorce loophole as bait,” Victoria whispered, her voice trembling slightly as the pieces fell into place.
“I used whatever tools were available to stop a criminal,” Julian replied coldly. “And now, your presence here is compromising an ongoing federal investigation. I suggest you leave before my security team escorts you out.”
