Chapter 2

Time seemed to stretch, bending around the brilliant silhouette in the doorway like heavy velvet. Maya’s breath caught in her throat. Her heart hammered against her ribs with terrifying speed, a frantic rhythm that drowned out the principal calling the next student’s name over the loudspeaker. The entire gymnasium had gone dead silent. Five hundred teenagers, parents, and faculty members turned in unison, following the line of Maya’s disbelieving gaze toward the back of the room.
Thomas didn’t smile right away. His weathered face bore the deep lines of exhaustion and the unmistakable tension of a man who had traveled thousands of miles across continents and time zones without a single moment of rest. His muscular frame filled out the crisp Army dress uniform with the quiet dignity of a soldier who had just stepped off a military transport plane hours ahead of schedule. He had missed connecting flights, bribed a taxi driver with his last fifty-dollar bill, and run the final three blocks from the town bus stop, all just to make this exact window of time.
Maya dropped her yellow tassel. It hit the polished gymnasium floor with a soft plastic clatter that went entirely unheard. The distance between them felt vast—a hundred yards of green folding chairs and staring faces—yet it was nothing compared to the ten thousand miles that had separated them just a week ago.

Her legs moved before her brain could process the command. She kicked off her light beige wedges, letting them tumble aside, and began to run barefoot across the hardwood floor. The polished wood was slick, but she didn’t care. The murmurs in the crowd swelled into a collective, rising gasp of realization and delight as the other graduates realized what was happening. Camera shutters clicked frantically in the bleachers, and glowing smartphone screens tracked her every stride.
Thomas took his first step forward into the gym, crossing the threshold from the blinding sunlight into the shadows. He opened his arms wide, dropping his duffel bag to the floor with a heavy thud. The uniform jacket shifted across his broad shoulders as he braced himself, his boots striking the floor with measured, deliberate steps. He didn’t say a word, but his eyes communicated a depth of love and relief that shattered the remaining distance between them. Maya accelerated, closing the gap in seconds, ready to crash into the safety of the only home she had ever truly known.
