Chapter 10: The Severing

You are damaging the infrastructure, Nathaniel, Carol said, her voice dropping into a harsh, metallic register that rattled the glass panes of the conservatory. Without the foundation, the entire narrative collapses. We will all dissolve into nothingness.

Better to dissolve into nothing than to live as ghosts in a machine, Nathaniel shouted back, his fingers hooking beneath the thickest copper cable connected to the pulsing root cluster.

He braced his boots against the damp earth and pulled with all his might. Pain flared in his shoulders, and his muscles screamed in protest, but the cable groaned, the solder joints sparking with bright blue electric arcs that illuminated the surrounding roses.

Ivy peeked out from behind the stone planter, raising the small silver spoon high in her tiny hand as if directing an orchestra. Cut the heart, daddy! Make the mean face go away!

With a final, guttural roar of exertion, Nathaniel threw his entire body weight backward. The heavy copper cable snapped with a deafening report, spraying sparks and a foul-smelling gray mist that smelled of ozone and ancient dust.

Carol shrieked—a sound of genuine, human agony that shattered every glass pane in the conservatory in a single, synchronized explosion. Shards of crystal rained down like shimmering snow, catching the frozen sunlight as they fell.

Carol stumbled backward, her hands flying to her head as her elaborate blonde braids unraveled instantly, falling in disarray around her shoulders. The pearl straps of her white wedding gown snapped, and the pristine fabric began to fray and yellow before their eyes, aging forty years in a matter of seconds.

The ground beneath them shuddered violently, a deep, tectonic groan vibrating upward from the foundation stones. The mansion behind them seemed to contract, the grand white walls shuddering as if exhaling a breath it had held for half a century.

What have you done? Carol whispered, her voice fluctuating wildly between the melodic bride and the harsh, mechanical entity. The loop... the loop is breaking!

Nathaniel scrambled back to his feet, scooping Ivy into his arms as the flagstones beneath them began to crack and heave. The manicured hedges withered instantly, their vibrant pink roses turning to gray ash that scattered in the sudden, howling wind.

We’re leaving, Carol, Nathaniel said, his voice steady and resolute as he stared at the woman who had held them hostage. You can come with us, or you can stay with the ruins. But the performance is over.
