Chapter 1 - The Broken Lock

Leo’s small hand trembled as he gripped the heavy iron hammer. The metal tool felt cold and far too large for his eight-year-old palm, yet his desperate determination outweighed his physical limits. Dust swirled in the afternoon sunlight as he brought the hammer down against the rusted padlock. The impact sent a sharp, metallic sting up his arm, but he refused to stop. Tears blurred his vision, tracking clean paths through the dirt smeared across his cheeks. He wore a stained blue polo shirt and dusty khaki shorts, his messy dark hair clinging to his damp forehead.

“Mommy, you're in there!” Leo sobbed, swinging the hammer again with a desperate, frantic cry.

From across the overgrown lawn, footsteps crunched heavily on the dry grass. Clara rushed forward, her dark hair flying wildly around her pale face. She wore a simple beige top, her eyes wide with mounting panic.

“Stop! You are not opening that door!” Clara shouted, her voice cracking with terror as she sprinted toward the old wooden shed.

Before she could reach them, a heavy shadow fell over the grass. Arthur, her bald husband dressed in a rumpled white shirt, bolted from the side of the house. He lunged forward with surprising speed, his thick fingers wrapping tightly around Leo’s small arm to yank the hammer away.

“Dad, let go! Mommy is really down there!” Leo screamed, struggling against Arthur’s unyielding grip while pointing frantically at the trembling wooden door.

Arthur’s face turned an ash-gray color. He looked past the struggling boy, his eyes locking onto the heavy latch. The padlock was battered, its shackle deeply dented from Leo’s frantic blows. Inside the dark, subterranean space beneath the floorboards, a faint, muffled sound echoed—the sound of someone drawing a desperate, terrified breath.

Clara skidded to a halt beside them, chest heaving. She grabbed Arthur’s sleeve, her voice dropping to a harsh, trembling whisper.

“He heard her, Arthur. He actually heard her voice through the floor vents.”

Arthur didn't answer right away. His jaw tightened until the skin stretched white over bone. He looked down at Leo, whose tear-filled eyes held a terrifying mixture of innocence and absolute certainty. The boy wrenched his arm free from Arthur's loosened grip and pointed directly at the heavy wooden threshold, whispering words that froze the blood in Arthur's veins.
