Chapter 10: A Trial of Conscience

The emergency audit committee hearing was held behind closed doors in the executive auditorium on the fiftieth floor, overlooking a city skyline now bruised by the purple hues of an approaching autumn storm. Marcus Vance sat at the center table, flanked by two high-priced defense attorneys he had hastily retained from a downtown firm, their tailored suits looking entirely out of place against the grim reality of the evidence stacked neatly before them. Julian Vance sat quietly in the front row of the gallery, holding three-year-old Lily on his lap while she softly braided the fringe of his woolen scarf. Arthur stood at the podium, acting as the primary witness for the prosecution, his voice steady and resonant as he walked the committee through every single fraudulent transaction Marcus had orchestrated over the past eighteen months.

"Mr. Vance diverted three point five million dollars earmarked for the St. Jude Community Center renovation project into an offshore shell corporation named Meridian Holdings," Arthur explained, clicking a remote to project the corresponding bank wire confirmations onto the massive auditorium screen. "He falsified contractor invoices, pressured junior accountants to sign off on ghost payrolls, and used charitable funds to purchase private luxury real estate in the Hamptons." Marcus’s lead attorney stood up abruptly, slamming his palm onto the table. "Objection! Speculative character assassination without direct proof of personal enrichment!" Julian Vance spoke softly from the gallery, his voice carrying effortlessly across the cavernous room without even raising a decibel. "There is no speculation in a signed confession, counselor. Check page forty-two of the exhibit dossier."

Marcus’s face went chalk white. He grabbed the dossier with shaking hands, flipping frantically to page forty-two, where a signed wire transfer authorization bearing his own personal notary seal and fingerprint stared back at him like an execution notice. His attorneys looked at the document, exchanged a brief, silent glance, and slowly closed their leather briefcases. They knew when a case was entirely unwinnable. Marcus slumped forward in his chair, his arrogance completely shattered, reduced to a desperate, cornered man whispering hurried excuses to empty air. The committee chairman, a veteran director who had served alongside Julian for decades, cleared his throat and delivered the verdict with chilling finality. "Marcus Vance is hereby terminated from all executive duties effective immediately, his stock options are forfeited under the moral turpitude clause, and all relevant financial records are being transferred directly to the federal prosecutor's office."
