Chapter 10: The Nursery and the Horizon

With the legal battle concluded, Clara redirected her entire focus toward the impending arrival of her baby. The nursery at Arthur’s estate was completely finished—a peaceful haven filled with soft lighting, educational books, and hand-stitched quilts. Mrs. Gable had prepared a bassinet that had belonged to Clara when she was an infant, adding a generational layer of warmth and continuity to the room. Clara spent hours organizing baby supplies, feeling a deep, intuitive connection with the life growing inside her.

Arthur had taken a step back from his demanding caseload at the law firm, dedicating significant time to preparing for his role as a grandfather. He had installed safety gates, updated the estate’s security infrastructure, and even converted an adjoining room into a private study where he could work remotely while keeping an eye on Clara. Their relationship had transformed into a profound partnership of mutual care and deep respect.

One afternoon, as Clara rested on the chaise lounge in the sunroom, Arthur walked in carrying a small, beautifully wrapped package. He placed it gently on the coffee table beside her. “A little gift from Mrs. Gable and me,” he said with a warm smile.

Clara unboxed the paper to reveal a hand-carved wooden rocking chair, polished to a warm amber finish and upholstered in soft cream linen. It was a stunning piece of craftsmanship, sturdy and timeless, built to endure for generations. Tears pricked Clara’s eyes, but they were tears of pure joy and profound gratitude. She ran her fingers along the smooth wooden armrest, contrasting the memory of the violent, splintered chair on Maple Street with this symbol of enduring peace and safety.

“Thank you, Dad,” Clara whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “It’s... it’s perfect.”

“Every home needs furniture that holds you up, Clara, not furniture that gets thrown around,” Arthur said softly, sitting in the armchair across from her. “You and this baby deserve a foundation that can never be shaken.”
