Chapter 1

The crystal chandeliers of the Grand Meridian Ballroom chimed softly under the weight of three hundred glittering guests, but the noise inside Julian Vance’s head was deafening. He sat at the center mahogany table, adjusting his maroon silk tie with agonizing slowness. Across from him, the lingering scent of expensive champagne and caramelized sugar hung thick in the air, a stark contrast to the glacial atmosphere between him and Jennifer. Jennifer stood rigidly at the head of the banquet table, her green sleeveless dress catching the cold amber light of the room. Between them lay a simple black leather clipboard holding a single sheet of heavy parchment. That parchment contained a total that defied planetary economics: four hundred and fifty-five billion dollars.

Julian tapped his middle finger against a folded damask napkin, a steady, rhythmic thud that matched the frantic beating of his heart. He forced the corners of his mouth upward into a veneer of amusement, looking up through dark eyelashes.

"Pay it," Julian said softly, his voice barely carrying over the low murmur of distant string quartets.

Jennifer did not blink. Her brown hair framed a face drained of color, her jaw set like carved granite. She looked down at the staggering figures itemized beneath the corporate letterhead of Vance Global Holdings.

"No," Jennifer said.

Julian’s fabricated smile evaporated instantly, replaced by a cold, predatory stare as he leaned his torso forward over the mahogany. The silver cutlery between them rattled slightly.

"You pay it," Julian hissed, the warmth entirely drained from his baritone.

Jennifer shifted her weight, gripping the edges of the clipboard until her knuckles turned ivory. She turned her head slightly to address the scattered tables where international executives, politicians, and media moguls watched the drama unfold in stunned silence.

"It's not my child's party, so why should I pay?" Jennifer demanded, her voice cutting cleanly through the ambient noise of the hall.

Julian’s eyes dilated, his pupils swallowing the amber light as his jaw tightened until the muscles ached. He stared straight ahead, his teeth bared in a silent snarl of absolute disbelief and fury.

"Jennifer, what is this?" Julian yelled, the sudden violence of his volume cracking the hushed acoustics of the ballroom and drawing every panicked eye in the venue directly to their frozen standoff.

The silence that followed was absolute, suffocating, and permanent. The party was over. The bill had arrived.
