Chapter 12

The sedan pulled up to the curb of a quiet, unassuming brick apartment building located in a mixed residential district a few miles from the city center. Julian parked the car along the wet curb, turned off the engine, and stepped out into the cool evening air, breathing in the scent of wet pavement and distant autumn foliage. He reached into the backseat and retrieved his cardboard box of personal effects—the same box he had carried out of his former house just hours earlier—while Arthur walked ahead to unlock the heavy glass front door of the building. They climbed a single flight of stairs to the second floor, stopping before apartment 204, where Arthur produced a brass key and turned the deadbolt with a solid, reassuring click. Inside, the apartment was compact, clean, and sparsely furnished with a small wooden desk, a simple sofa, and a neatly made bed near the window overlooking the quiet street below. Julian walked into the center of the room and set his cardboard box down upon the desk, looking around at the modest space that would now serve as both his dwelling and his operational headquarters. It was a far cry from the spacious suburban colonial he had lost, but as he ran his hand along the smooth wood of the desk, he felt a strange, unexpected sense of grounding. There was no excessive square footage to hide behind, no illusory wealth to maintain, and no false security to protect against the inevitable tides of time. Arthur stepped into the doorway, leaning against the frame with his dark coat unbuttoned at last, revealing the grey sweater underneath that matched the quiet tone of the evening. He placed a thick manila folder containing the initial case files for their upcoming corporate audit onto the desk beside Julian’s box, marking the official commencement of their partnership. Julian looked at the folder, then up at Arthur, and offered a firm, quiet nod that communicated complete acceptance of their new reality. The reckoning was complete, the books were balanced, and the difficult, necessary work of rebuilding their lives from the ground up was finally ready to begin.
