Chapter 8: The Knock on the Door

The walkway of the apartment complex was shaded by a rusted metal overhang, casting long, cool shadows over the chipped green paint of the front doors. Number four B was located at the very end of the breezeway, tucked away in a quiet corner next to a potted cactus that had seen better days. Daniel’s boots clicked heavily against the concrete with every measured step, each one sounding to him like the striking of a grandfather clock counting down his final moments of nervous hesitation.

Michael walked slightly behind him, offering a silent, steady physical presence that anchored Daniel to the moment. When they reached the door, Daniel raised a calloused hand, his fingers hovering just inches above the scratched wooden surface. He hesitated, his chest rising and falling in shallow, rapid breaths.

“Go ahead, Daniel,” Michael encouraged quietly, his hand resting gently on the small of the older man’s back.

With a deep, resolute exhale, Daniel lowered his fist and knocked twice—firm, deliberate, respectful raps that echoed down the quiet breezeway.

For several agonizing seconds, there was absolute silence from inside the apartment. Daniel exchanged a brief, anxious glance with Michael, wondering if the trip had been for nothing, if Sarah Vance had moved away or simply wasn't home. Then, the muffled sound of footsteps approached from the other side of the door. The heavy deadbolt clicked audibly, and the brass doorknob turned.

The door swung inward to reveal a woman in her late twenties, wearing a simple gray t-shirt and jeans, her hair pulled back into a loose ponytail. She had sharp, intelligent eyes and a cautious expression that instantly mirrored the defensive posture of someone used to unexpected visitors in a rough neighborhood. She looked past Michael’s imposing form in the sharp grey suit, her gaze immediately landing on the scruffy, weather-beaten older man standing on her welcome mat.

“Can I help you?” Sarah asked, her voice polite but guarded, hands resting casually on her hips.

Daniel tried to speak, but his throat locked up completely. For all his military courage, facing this young woman with her father’s unfulfilled legacy felt infinitely more terrifying than dodging bullets in a war zone.

Michael stepped forward slightly, keeping his demeanor disarming and professional. “Good afternoon, Ms. Vance. I’m Michael, and this is Daniel. We’re sorry to disturb you out of the blue, but Daniel traveled a long way to see you today. He has something that belongs to your father.”

Sarah froze. The cautious guard in her eyes flickered, replaced instantly by a sharp, piercing intensity that ran in the family bloodline. She looked from Michael back to Daniel, her breath catching slightly in her throat.

“My father?” she whispered, the name carrying a heavy, unresolved grief. “Lieutenant Marcus Vance died ten years ago. What could you possibly have that belongs to him?”
