Chapter 12: Preparing for Testimony

The winter frost melted into the gentle rains of early spring, bringing vibrant green shoots to the garden beds outside Clara’s windows. Life within the household had settled into a steady, comforting rhythm. Toby was thriving, his laughter echoing down the hallway as he built elaborate Lego castles with his mother on the living room rug. The emotional scars of the past winter were slowly fading, replaced by a secure bond built on trust, open communication, and unwavering maternal protection.

Yet, a new challenge loomed on the horizon. The criminal trial against Eleanor Evans had been officially scheduled for the upcoming month, and Marcus Vance—along with ADA Patricia Gable—had requested formal depositions from both Clara and Toby. To ensure Toby felt completely secure, Sarah, the child psychologist, had spent weeks preparing him for the deposition process, framing it not as an interrogation, but as an opportunity to tell his story to people who would make sure he was always safe.

Clara sat at the kitchen island, reviewing the deposition schedule while sipping her morning tea. The doorbell rang softly, and Marcus Vance stepped into the entryway, letting himself in with the spare key Clara had provided him during the height of the legal battle. He carried a fresh batch of pastries from the local bakery and a neatly organized folder containing the final deposition outlines.

"Good morning, Clara. Good morning, champ," Marcus greeted cheerfully as Toby ran over to show him his latest Lego creation. After exchanging pleasantries and admiring the plastic architecture, Marcus sat down at the kitchen counter across from Clara, his expression turning professional.

"The defense tried every procedural trick in the book to have the charges dismissed, but the judge threw out their motions yesterday morning," Marcus began, opening the folder. "Harrison Cole has realized his client’s case is toxic. Word is, they’re going to push for a plea bargain to avoid a messy public trial that would expose her history of malicious filings across the county."

Clara felt a wave of relief wash over her. "So we might not have to go through a full trial?"

"It’s entirely possible," Marcus replied. "However, Eleanor is stubborn. She still believes she can out-negotiate the state attorney's office based on her age and social standing. That’s why your deposition remains critical. If she sees that you and Toby are fully prepared to testify with absolute clarity and unshakable evidence, her legal team will force her to take the plea."

"I am ready," Clara said without hesitation. "And Toby understands what he needs to do. Sarah has been incredible in helping him process everything without fear."

Marcus nodded approvingly. "That’s the beauty of resilience, Clara. You faced a predator who tried to tear your world apart, and you didn't just survive—you dismantled her entire operation from the ground up."
