Chapter 11: The Dinner Table Truce

The formal dining room of the Vance mansion was a masterclass in gothic opulence, featuring a long mahogany table lit by the soft glow of silver candelabras and a roaring stone fireplace. At the head of the table sat Arthur, impeccably dressed in his standard black suit, cutting a piece of roasted lamb with slow, deliberate strokes. To his right sat Lily in a neat blue velvet dress, chatting happily about her porcelain dolls. To his left, the seat remained empty until the double doors swung open silently.

Elena entered the room, moving with the hesitation of someone walking through a minefield. She wore a simple emerald-green silk dress that contrasted sharply with her pale skin and the faint remnants of bruises along her jawline. Every eye in the room turned toward her, but her gaze remained fixed on the empty chair beside Arthur.

“Good evening, Elena,” Arthur said, his voice smooth and welcoming, carrying the cadence of a loving husband hosting a quiet family dinner. “I’m glad you decided to join us. Doesn’t she look lovely, Lily?”

“Mommy’s dress is pretty,” Lily chirped, flashing a bright, innocent smile across the table.

“Thank you, Lily,” Elena replied, her voice trembling slightly before she managed to steady it. She pulled out her chair and sat down, the silver cutlery clinking softly against the porcelain plate in front of her.

Mrs. Gable materialized from the shadows, quietly pouring a glass of sparkling water for Elena before retreating back to the perimeter of the room. The atmosphere at the table was thick with an unbearable tension that only the adults could feel. To Lily, it was simply another family dinner in the grand, quiet house where rules were absolute and love was defined by obedience.

“The financial reports from the European subsidiary came in this morning,” Arthur said casually, slicing another piece of meat. “The transition we discussed has stabilized the quarterly yields. It seems our investments are secure for the foreseeable future.”

Elena looked up from her plate, her eyes meeting his across the candlelight. The subtext of his words was clear to both of them: the digital battle was over, and he had won total control of his empire. She offered a cold, brittle smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “I’m glad to hear your business is prospering, Arthur.”

“It’s not just my business, my love,” Arthur corrected softly, his dark eyes locking onto hers with intense psychological pressure. “It’s our family’s security. Everything I do is to ensure that nothing disturbs the peace of this home.”

“Peace,” Elena repeated the word like a bitter pill, swallowing it down with a sip of water.

“Yes, peace,” Arthur reiterated firmly. “And protection. As long as everyone plays their assigned part, this house remains a sanctuary from the chaos of the outside world.”

The conversation drifted back to mundane topics as Lily began chattering about her drawing lessons, masking the underlying war of wills beneath polite table manners. Throughout the meal, Arthur remained the master of ceremonies, orchestrating every word and gesture to maintain the fragile illusion of a happy family. Yet, beneath the polished veneer, Elena was already calculating her next move, knowing that absolute control always carried the seeds of its own destruction.
