Chapter 18 - WHAT A FATHER CHOOSESThere was a time when I would have considered Evelyn's demand an insult.

Come alone.
Stand where I tell you.
Follow my instructions.
Vincent Moretti didn't accept ultimatums.
Not from rivals.
Not from associates.
Not from people who threatened his family.
But the man who believed that had already cost too many people too much.
I looked at Rebecca Shaw.
"Can you get Hannah out?"
"We're coordinating a response. You are not going anywhere without our knowledge."
I nodded.
"Then tell me what you need."
Shaw studied me.
For a moment, I saw something almost like surprise.
Then she began explaining what the investigators could and could not allow.
I listened.
I asked questions.
I didn't argue when she told me certain details had to remain with the professionals responsible for the operation.
At last, she said:
"If we determine your involvement is necessary, it will be strictly controlled. If not, you stay here."
I took a breath.
"Understood."
Before any decision was made, I called Rosa.
She answered immediately.
"Vincent?"
"How are the children?"
"Sleeping."
"Good."
A pause.
"Rosa, I need you to know something."
Her voice softened.
"What is it?"
"I may be away for a while after this is over."
She said nothing.
I continued.
"Samuel has the information about the children's finances and the arrangements we've discussed. I want you to help make sure they're protected."
"Vincent—"
"And I want you to tell them something."
Her breathing changed.
"What?"
"Tell them I love them."
"You can tell them yourself."
I closed my eyes.
"I will. As soon as I can. But tell them anyway."
Rosa was crying now.
"I will."
I ended the call and looked at Claire's photograph on my phone.
Her smile.
Her eyes.
The woman who had believed I could be better, even when I gave her so little reason.
"I'm trying, Claire," I whispered.
"I'm finally trying."
By midmorning, investigators had established the location where Evelyn intended to bring Hannah.
A private waterfront property north of the city.
It was associated with one of Evelyn's holding companies.
Several vehicles had arrived.
A vessel was tied to a nearby dock.
Federal and local authorities were coordinating their response.
I remained under supervision while the situation developed.
Then Evelyn called again.
This time, she allowed Hannah to speak.
"Vincent?"
"Hannah."
"I'm okay."
Her voice was strained.
But she was alive.
"Listen to me," I said. "Help is coming."
"I know."
I swallowed.
"I'm sorry."
A pause.
"For what?"
"For not seeing what Claire saw. For letting Dominic become someone you had to fight alone. For all of it."
Hannah was quiet.
Then she said:
"Vincent, don't turn this into another reason to hate yourself."
My eyes burned.
"How can you say that right now?"
"Because Emma and Noah need a father who keeps living."
I covered my face.
She continued.
"You can regret the past without letting it decide every moment of your future."
A man shouted in the background.
Hannah lowered her voice.
"One thing I know is true."
I couldn't speak.
She waited.
Finally, I whispered:
"You're not alone."
Her breath caught.
"That's right."
The line disconnected.
I sat perfectly still.
For the first time since the nursery attack, I wasn't thinking about revenge.
I was thinking about Hannah coming home.
Alive.
Able to hold the children.
Able to sit in the yellow kitchen and complain about Noah putting too much syrup on his pancakes.
That ordinary future had become the only victory I wanted.
The operation unfolded over the next hour.
Investigators moved into position.
Evelyn attempted to leave the waterfront property with Hannah and Olivia.
When she realized law enforcement had secured the surrounding area, she retreated toward a covered loading platform.
Then the situation became dangerous.
Evelyn had a gun.
She held it close to Hannah.
For several terrible minutes, I could only listen to fragmentary updates from the room where I was waiting.
I heard words like negotiation.
Hostage.
No clear movement.
I stared at the wall.
Every instinct urged me to run toward the danger.
But running there wouldn't help Hannah.
It would give Evelyn another person to threaten.
So I stayed.
And I trusted the people working to bring her out.
Later, Hannah told me that Evelyn had been furious.
Not frightened.
Furious.
She couldn't understand why people she'd paid had stopped obeying her.
She couldn't understand why Peter had helped Olivia.
She couldn't understand why Vincent Moretti was cooperating with federal agents instead of threatening everyone in sight.
"You could have been rich," Evelyn had told Hannah.
Hannah had looked at her.
"I have enough."
Evelyn laughed.
"You live in a rented apartment."
"I know."
"You spent months caring for another woman's children."
"Yes."
"And now you're willing to die for them?"
Hannah answered without hesitation.
"I'm willing to protect them."
Evelyn tightened her grip on the weapon.
"You think that makes you noble?"
"No."
Hannah met her eyes.
"I think children deserve to be safe."
Evelyn's expression twisted.
"You're just like Claire."
Hannah's voice broke for the first time.
"Thank you."
A few minutes later, investigators were able to safely separate Hannah and Olivia from Evelyn.
Evelyn was taken into custody.
Neither young woman was seriously injured during the final confrontation.
When Shaw finally entered the room where I was waiting, I stood so quickly my chair fell backward.
"Hannah?"
"She's safe."
I stared.
"Say it again."
Shaw's expression softened.
"Hannah Mercer is safe."
My knees almost gave way.
I sank into the chair.
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Then I began crying.
Not quietly.
Not discreetly.
I cried the way I had wanted to cry for eight months and hadn't allowed myself to.
For Claire.
For Emma.
For Noah.
For the people who had disappeared while my name protected the system that harmed them.
And for Hannah.
The woman who had walked into my home as a stranger and reminded me that goodness was still possible.
Later that afternoon, I saw her at the hospital.
She was sitting upright in bed.
A bandage covered her arm.
Her hair had fallen loose around her shoulders.
When I entered, she looked up.
For one moment, neither of us spoke.
Then I crossed the room.
"You're alive."
She smiled faintly.
"That seems to be the case."
I laughed.
A broken, helpless sound.
Then I embraced her.
Carefully.
Afraid I might hurt her.
Hannah wrapped her arms around me.
And for the first time since Claire's death, I held someone without feeling that love was a weakness.
I pulled back.
"Emma and Noah have been asking about you."
Her eyes filled.
"Are they okay?"
"They will be."
She nodded.
"Good."
I sat beside her.
"There's something I need to tell you."
She looked at me.
"I'm listening."
I took a breath.
"I don't know what happens next. With the company. With the investigation. With me."
Hannah remained still.
"But I know that whatever happens, you've changed my life."
Her eyes shimmered.
"Vincent—"
"You showed me that protecting people isn't the same as controlling them. You showed me that my children need love more than they need walls."
I swallowed.
"And you showed me that I can still choose to be someone Claire would recognize."
Hannah reached for my hand.
"Then keep choosing."
I nodded.
"I will."
A knock sounded at the door.
Rebecca Shaw entered.
Samuel stood behind her.
Something in their expressions told me the moment I'd been expecting had arrived.
Shaw approached the bed.
"Miss Mercer, I need a moment with Mr. Moretti."
Hannah looked at me.
I squeezed her hand once.
"It's okay."
I stood.
Shaw faced me.
"Vincent Moretti, additional evidence has been reviewed concerning your involvement in racketeering activities, fraudulent transactions, and the concealment of unlawful business operations."
I nodded slowly.
She continued.
"A federal warrant has been issued for your arrest."
Hannah made a small sound behind me.
I looked at her.
Then at Shaw.
For years, I had believed that being arrested would be the ultimate humiliation.
Now I understood something I'd never considered.
The law was finally treating me as a man responsible for his own choices.
Not as a king.
Not as someone beyond consequences.
Just a man.
I held out my hands.
"I understand."
Then I looked back at Hannah.
"Please tell Emma and Noah something for me."
Her eyes were full of tears.
"What?"
May you like
I smiled through my own.
"Tell them Daddy is going to come back."
