Chapter 4: Unraveling the Gathering

The phone screen illuminated the dark living room with a harsh blue glow as Julian dialed his best man, Marcus. It rang only twice before Marcus answered, his voice a tense murmur that suggested he had stepped away from the murmuring crowd of wedding guests.

"Julian? Man, what is going on?" Marcus asked, the confusion evident in his tone. "The guests are all still sitting at the tables. Clara came out of the bridal suite alone, looking like she’d seen a ghost, and she’s refusing to talk to anyone. People are asking where you went. Are you guys okay?"

"The wedding is canceled, Marcus," Julian said, his voice flat and resolute. "There is no reception. It’s over."

A heavy silence stretched across the line. Marcus knew how much planning had gone into the day, but more importantly, he knew the underlying tensions that had plagued Julian’s household for months.

"Is it Lily?" Marcus asked quietly, the genuine concern in his voice cutting through the professional distance he usually maintained.

"It’s Lily," Julian confirmed, his grip tightening slightly around the phone. "Clara told her that after today, she wouldn’t be family anymore. She locked her in the dressing room and terrified her. I found her crying."

An intake of breath hissed through the speaker on the other end. Marcus had always been polite to Clara, but he had witnessed firsthand how cold and impatient she could be when children were present, dismissing them as inconveniences in her polished world.

"Jesus, Julian. I am so sorry," Marcus said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "Do you need me to clear things out at the venue? Tell the caterers, handle the families?"

"If you could help manage the fallout tonight, I would appreciate it," Julian replied, rubbing his temples with his free hand. "Tell our families the truth, or at least the core of it. I won't have anyone blaming Lily. I’m staying here with her tonight. I need to be here when she wakes up."

"Consider it done," Marcus said firmly. "Take care of my niece, Julian. We’ll sort out the rest tomorrow."

Julian ended the call and tossed the phone back onto the table, right beside the discarded wedding ring. The physical act of letting go felt complete, yet he knew the emotional rebuilding process for him and Lily was only just beginning. He walked back down the hall to check on her one last time before trying to rest himself.
