Chapter 11 - The District Attorney’s Threshold

The heavy oak doors of the municipal district attorney’s office loomed large as Marcus and Ava walked up the marble steps late that afternoon. The winter wind whipped through the downtown corridor, but neither of them felt the cold anymore. The Foundation’s official report was safely tucked inside Marcus’s leather briefcase, serving as undeniable proof of Ava’s innocence and Nia’s calculated deception. Yet, as Marcus looked down at his daughter—who was calmly checking the compilation status of her coding project on her phone—he felt a profound sadness for the family that had just disintegrated around them.
“Are you doing okay, Ava?” Marcus asked softly, pausing beneath the stone archway of the entrance.
Ava looked up from her screen, her eyes clear and resolute. “I was scared yesterday, Dad. I thought maybe Mom was right—that I wasn't ready for a real computer or a real future in tech. But seeing everything laid out today... I realized I earned every single line of code I wrote. I’m not scared anymore.”
Marcus smiled, feeling a deep wave of paternal pride wash over him. He placed a hand on her shoulder, and together they pushed open the glass doors and stepped into the bustling waiting area. The room was filled with filing cabinets, stressed clerks, and lawyers reviewing briefs under fluorescent lights. They approached the intake desk, where a middle-aged receptionist with tired eyes looked up from her computer screen.
“Can I help you?” the receptionist asked mechanically.
“We’re here to submit supplemental evidence for the State Academic Foundation fraud referral involving Nia and Julian Vance,” Marcus stated, placing his briefcase on the counter and unlatching the brass clasps.
The receptionist’s demeanor changed instantly. She stopped typing, reached for a yellow intake form, and slid it across the counter. “Fill this out and take a seat in the back row. Investigator Vance is wrapping up a deposition right now and will be with you shortly.”
As Marcus turned around to guide Ava toward the empty metal chairs against the back wall, the entrance doors swung open behind them, letting in a bitter gust of wind and two familiar figures. Nia and Julian walked into the waiting room, both looking disheveled and frantic, having clearly followed the Foundation’s trail straight to the courthouse.

Nia stopped dead in her tracks when she saw Marcus and Ava sitting by the back wall, holding a stack of legal paperwork that clearly spelled out the end of her carefully built web of lies.
