Chapter 10

The heavy oak doors of the manor shut behind them with a muffled finality, sealing out the cool night air. The grand foyer was quiet now, the lingering guests having finally departed into the night, leaving the sprawling house feeling cavernous and hollow.

Clara leaned the hunting rifle carefully against the mahogany side table, her muscles aching from the sustained tension. She turned to face Eleanor, who had lowered herself onto the velvet settee near the grand staircase, looking suddenly frail and broken under the chandelier's brilliant light.

"You need to tell me everything," Clara said, her voice uncompromising. She sat down in the armchair opposite her mother-in-law, crossing her hands in her lap. "Julian mentioned the foundation. He said this house was built on ruin. I want the truth, Eleanor, and I want it now."

Eleanor stared down at her trembling hands, her fingers nervously twisting the pearls around her neck. For a long time, the only sound in the room was the steady ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner.

"Your husband... Thomas was a good man to you, Clara. I know that," Eleanor began softly, her voice barely above a whisper. "He loved you and Lily with all his heart. But he grew up in the shadow of a monster. His father wasn't a self-made man; he was a speculator who ruined dozens of families during the crash of the nineties. Julian found out years ago. He wanted to return the stolen assets to the families who lost everything. Thomas... Thomas refused, believing that protecting the family name was more important than correcting past sins."

"And that's why Julian hates us?" Clara asked, processing the devastating weight of the history.

"That's why he hates the name," Eleanor corrected, looking up with tears shining in her eyes. "He doesn't want our money, Clara. He wants to strip away every layer of respectability until nothing is left. He wants us to feel the exact same helplessness as the people his father destroyed."

Clara shook her head slowly, a profound sense of clarity replacing her initial panic. "We can't hide from it anymore. Running or hiding just gives him power. If the estate was built on stolen ground, we find out who was hurt, and we make it right."

Eleanor gasped, her eyes widening in shock. "That would ruin us. The foundation, the trust fund, this house—we would lose everything."

"Then we lose it," Clara said firmly. "I would rather raise Lily in a small apartment with a clear conscience than watch her grow up trapped behind an iron fence built on lies."

Before Eleanor could reply, a sharp tap sounded from the upper landing. Clara looked up to see Lily standing at the top of the stairs, rubbing her eyes in her pink dress, looking small and vulnerable in the dim hallway light.

"Mommy?" Lily called out softly. "Can I come down now?"
