Chapter 10

A sharp, metallic click echoed through the corridor as the heavy double doors swung wide open. Three tall figures in tactical black vests strode into the hallway, their boots striking the hardwood floor with synchronized precision. Across the front of their gear, bright yellow letters spelled out a terrifying reality for anyone standing in their way: FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION.
Mark turned pale as a sheet, the brass candlestick slipping from his trembling fingers and clattering loudly down the wooden stairs. "No... that's impossible. The federal sweep isn't scheduled until Monday!"
The lead agent, a weathered woman with sharp silver hair and cold gray eyes, rested her hand casually on the holster of her sidearm. She stopped twenty feet away, her gaze sweeping over Mark, Julian, and finally resting on Elena in her ruined wedding gown.
"Mr. Sterling, you'd be surprised how fast a corporate board flips when they realize their CEO is liquidating pension funds to fund an escape," the federal agent said, her voice cutting through the tense air like a razor. She nodded toward the two agents flanking her. "Take him into custody. Secure the entire perimeter."
The agents moved forward with terrifying efficiency. Mark didn't fight back; the color had completely drained from his face, leaving him looking like a hollowed-out ghost of the arrogant groom who had strutted into the bridal suite an hour ago. As the steel cuffs snapped around his wrists, he cast one final, venomous glare toward Elena.
"You think you've won, Elena?" Mark hissed as the agents hauled him past her. "Check the trust fund documents. Your family’s name is legally tied to every single fraudulent transaction I made. You go down with me."
Elena didn't flinch. She met his desperate gaze with absolute indifference, stepping aside as they dragged him away toward the service elevator.
Julian slowly lowered his pistol, sliding it back into his shoulder holster with a soft click. He turned to Elena, his hazel eyes softening into a gaze that felt entirely too intimate for the chaotic wreckage surrounding them. "Are you alright?" he asked quietly.
Elena let out a long, shuddering breath, the adrenaline finally beginning to fade from her system. She looked down at the cream-colored stationery clutched tightly in her hand—the letter Julian had written years ago, before Mark stole his identity, his life, and the woman he loved.
"I lost my wedding day, my illusion of safety, and my entire understanding of the past two years," Elena said, her voice steady as she looked up into Julian's face. "And yet... I think this is the first time I've ever felt truly awake."

Julian offered a faint, melancholy smile, reaching out to gently take her hand. "Then let's go downstairs and face the guests together."
They turned toward the grand staircase, stepping past the scattered rose petals, unaware of the single red laser dot dancing silently across the back of Julian's jacket.
