Chapter 4

Before Claire could demand an explanation for the cryptic remark, the sharp, authoritative chiming of the front doorbell reverberated through the expansive hallway. The sound was jarring, cutting through the heavy emotional fog of the living room like a knife. Julian flinched as if struck, while Claire froze, the white envelope clutched desperately in her trembling hands.
“Are we expecting guests?” Julian asked, though his hollow tone suggested he already knew the terrifying answer. No friends visited them anymore; the social circuit had abandoned them the moment the whispers of bankruptcy began circulating through the country club.
Martha did not wait for an invitation. She smoothed the front of her white blouse beneath her blue cardigan and turned smoothly on her heel, walking with steady, measured strides toward the foyer. The silver tray she had brought down earlier sat forgotten on the table, a relic of a morning that belonged to a completely different lifetime.
As she crossed the threshold into the expansive entryway, the doorbell rang a second time—shorter, sharper, and far more demanding. Martha approached the heavy mahogany front door, her breathing slow and controlled. She reached out and grasped the gleaming brass handle, turning it with a firm, decisive click that signaled the definitive end of their luxurious illusion.
Pulling the heavy door inward, Martha revealed a tall, imposing figure standing on the stone porch. The man was in his early fifties, impeccably dressed in a sharp black suit and tie that looked expensive and severe. In his right hand, he carried a sleek, black leather briefcase that gleamed faintly in the afternoon light. His gray hair was neatly trimmed, and his expression was entirely devoid of warmth, carved from the same uncompromising stone as the financial contracts he undoubtedly carried.
“Mrs. Collins?” the man asked, his voice low, measured, and carrying an undeniable weight of absolute authority.
“Yes,” Martha replied, her voice steady and completely devoid of fear or subservience.
The man offered a brief, humorless nod, stepping slightly across the threshold without waiting for a formal invitation, instantly asserting his dominance over the space. “They're ready for you.”

Behind Martha in the dim hallway, Julian and Claire stepped out of the living room, their faces pale and drawn as they stared in sheer disbelief at the visitor. Claire’s mouth opened slightly, ready to interject, ready to demand to know who this stranger was and by what authority he presumed to enter their home, but the words died in her throat when she saw the man look past Martha directly at them with cold indifference.
