Chapter 1

The sharp clack of high heels against the teakwood steps echoed loudly over the gentle slap of the dark ocean waves. Victoria Vance descended the illuminated stairway with absolute precision, every movement deliberate, fueled by a cold, searing fury that eclipsed her profound heartbreak. Above her, standing near the top landing under the amber glow of the deck lights, Julian Vance stared down with an expression that morphed from arrogant dismissal into sudden, creeping unease. Beside him, Clara Sterling adjusted the heavy ruby brooch pinned to her emerald velvet gown, her lips curled into a smirk of unearned triumph. Only moments ago, Julian and Clara had assumed their victory was absolute, believing Victoria was entirely unaware of their months-long clandestine affair and their coordinated corporate sabotage.

Victoria paused halfway down the stairs, her dark hair pulled back into an immaculate bun, held together by diamond-encrusted pins that glinted under the harsh spotlights. She wore her cream satin dress like armor, each fiber smoothing against her frame as she breathed in the salty night air to steady her racing pulse. Her pearl earrings caught the amber illumination, framing a jawline set in stone. She refused to let them see her shatter completely, though her chest heaved beneath the sleek fabric. She turned her head slightly, her dark eyes locking onto Julian with an intensity that made the seasoned corporate executive instinctively take a half-step backward.

“Get the hell off my yacht! You have nothing left here!” Victoria commanded, her voice ringing out crisp, clear, and devoid of tremor across the open water. The words hung in the damp air like broken glass.

Julian scoffed, attempting to mask his sudden internal panic with a practiced, cynical chuckle. He smoothed the lapels of his tailored black tuxedo and checked his expensive wristwatch, moving with the practiced arrogance of a man who thought he controlled every variable in the room. He exchanged a knowing glance with Clara, whose fingers gently traced the facets of the heirloom ruby pinned to her chest.

“Your yacht, Victoria? Let’s not be dramatic,” Julian replied smoothly, his tone dripping with condescension. “The board votes tomorrow morning. By noon, this vessel, the entire portfolio, and everything else you inherited from your father will legally belong to the holding company Clara and I established. You are merely a guest who overstayed her welcome.”

Victoria did not flinch. She simply turned her back on them, descending the remaining steps toward the lower aft deck where the cool sea breeze offered a temporary sanctuary from their toxic presence. Out of sight for a fraction of a second, her hand trembled slightly as she pulled her smartphone from a hidden pocket in her satin dress. The screen illuminated her face in a cold blue glow, revealing the first single tear that finally broke free from her lower lash line, tracing a solitary path down her flushed cheek.
