Chapter 2: The Locked Door

The heavy front door clicked shut with a muffled thud, sealing off the cool morning air from the warm interior of the foyer. Claire stood alone for a brief moment, listening to the muffled sound of Evelyn’s footsteps receding down the gravel driveway. The silence of the house felt heavy, laden with unspoken grievances and lingering questions about the property transfer papers signed just moments ago. Claire walked back toward the kitchen, her mind racing through the financial disclosures Evelyn had insisted upon reviewing. David and Thomas were still standing by the wooden bench, their low-toned conversation cutting off abruptly as Claire approached.

“Is everything finalized?” David asked, his brow furrowing as he noticed the tension etched into his wife’s features. He was a practical man, often blind to the subtle emotional undercurrents that governed his mother’s behavior, yet he could sense the rising friction.

“The paperwork is moved, but nothing feels settled,” Claire replied, keeping her voice restrained. She avoided dramatic outbursts, preferring a slow, deliberate approach to conflict resolution. She walked past them toward the kitchen island, picking up a stray envelope left behind. Thomas adjusted his glasses, offering a polite, professional nod before murmuring an excuse about checking his car for a forgotten briefcase.

David placed a comforting hand on Claire’s shoulder, his touch warm but ineffectual against the chill of betrayal creeping into her heart. “Mom is just trying to protect our interests,” he reasoned, using the phrase they had leaned on for months to excuse Evelyn’s overreaches.

“Protecting our interests shouldn't mean locking me out of decisions regarding my own home,” Claire countered softly, her dark eyes meeting his. She turned the envelope over in her hands, noticing the seal of a private security firm rather than a standard real estate agency. A sudden wave of unease washed over her. Why would Evelyn involve a private security firm in a family property transfer?

Without waiting for David’s reply, Claire walked swiftly back to the entryway. The smart lock on the front door glowed a steady, ominous red instead of its usual welcoming green. She pressed her thumb against the biometric scanner. The device buzzed sharply—access denied. Her heart skipped a beat. Evelyn had not merely collected paperwork; she had reconfigured the home’s master security permissions while standing right here in the kitchen. Claire reached for her phone to call Evelyn, but the heavy oak front door suddenly swung open, revealing Evelyn standing on the porch, a cold, unyielding smile touching the corners of her lips.
