Chapter 12

By nine o'clock, the moving truck had been driven away by the frustrated driver who finally realized his services were no longer required for the day. The street grew completely silent, save for the rustle of dry leaves blowing across the asphalt. Inside, the dining room table was cleared of the journals and photographs, replaced by a simple meal of leftover chicken soup Martha had heated on the stove and a loaf of crusty bread Sarah had picked up from the local bakery on her drive into town.

They sat around the table together—Martha at the head, Clara to her right, and Sarah and Randall side by side across from them. The atmosphere was no longer weighed down by suspicion or shock. Instead, a fragile, hard-earned peace settled over the room like an invisible blanket.

"Your father would have hated this," Martha said with a faint chuckle, stirring a spoonful of tea. "He hated mess above all else. And right now, our lives are about as messy as a carpenter's workshop on a Friday afternoon."

"He made the mess, Mom," Randall pointed out gently, though there was no bitterness left in his voice. "We’re just cleaning up the sawdust."

Sarah looked around the dining room, taking in the framed prints on the wall, the antique sideboard, and the warm glow of the overhead pendant light. "I talked to my daughter on the phone an hour ago," she said softly. "I told her about the house. I told her about Arthur, and about you, Randall. She wants to drive down this weekend to meet her uncle and her grandmother."

Randall felt a sudden warmth spread through his chest—a sensation he hadn't experienced since his father’s funeral. The horizon of his life, which had narrowed down to the confines of a single suburban property and a bitter sense of entitlement, suddenly opened up into something much larger, richer, and more complex.

"Tell her to bring her textbooks," Randall said, a genuine smile breaking across his face. "We have plenty of room. The spare bedroom upstairs has the best view of the maple tree in the front yard."
