Chapter 8: The Interruption

Before Clara could demand answers about the surveillance photographs or threaten to call the police right from her cell phone, a sharp, piercing sound cut through the silence of the hidden room. It was the frantic, high-pitched wail of the video baby monitor audio coming directly from Clara’s tactical belt. She fumbled with the pouch, pulling out her phone just as the screen lit up with live infrared footage from Lily’s nursery. The room was empty. The crib slats were pushed aside, and the soft fleece blanket lay tossed onto the floor. Maya’s voice crackled through the speaker, distorted by panic and static. "Mom! Mom, come down right now! Lily isn't in her room! She's... she's standing by the kitchen panel, and she's opening it from this side!"

Clara dropped the notebook, terror overriding every other rational thought. She turned and sprinted toward the narrow access tunnel, ignoring Julian Hayes’s desperate plea to stay. "Wait! The child knows the path! You mustn't disrupt the flow!" he shouted, his voice echoing off the acoustic foam. Clara didn't look back. She threw herself into the vertical shaft, sliding down the rope ladder with reckless disregard for her own safety, her palms burning against the rough hemp fiber. She hit the kitchen floor with a heavy thud, scrambling to her feet just in time to witness a nightmare unfolding in real time. The false back panel of the upper kitchen cabinet stood wide open. Eleven-year-old Maya was frozen in horror by the kitchen island, while two-year-old Lily stood calmly on the open countertop, her little hand resting firmly on a hidden brass lever built directly into the cabinetry frame.

Clara lunged forward, sweeping Lily up into her arms and pulling her tightly against her chest, backing away toward the refrigerator as if shielding her from an invisible beast. Lily didn't cry. She patted Clara’s cheek with a calm, reassuring hand, pointing back toward the dark opening in the cabinet with her other index finger. "The builder wants to come out, Mommy," Lily whispered in her innocent toddler voice, her bright blue eyes wide and serene. "He's tired of the dark." Clara stared at the open portal, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs. Julian Hayes stood at the top of the ladder shaft, framed by the darkness, looking down at them like a forgotten ghost waiting for permission to step out into the blinding light of the twenty-first century after fifty years of subterranean exile.
