Chapter 9: Uncovering the Past

Elena stood before the sleek walnut cabinetry, the hum of the cordless drill vibrating lightly in her palm. The installation was modern, seamless, and deceptively sturdy, anchored directly into the wall studs with heavy steel brackets. Behind this veneer of contemporary luxury lay the original fireproof safe built into the foundation stone of the house—the physical anchor of the Vance family trust.

Footsteps echoed softly on the hardwood behind her. Mark and Jessica didn't approach closely, choosing to maintain a tense distance at the edge of the library entrance. Jessica’s phone was still clutched tightly in her hand, the screen glowing with an active call interface, though she had stopped speaking.

“You’re destroying thousands of dollars worth of custom millwork for nothing,” Jessica said, her voice strained with repressed venom. “Even if there is an old metal box behind that wall, rust and moisture destroyed any paper inside decades ago. Basements in lake houses are damp tombs.”

Elena didn’t dignify the taunt with a response. She raised the heavy drill, selecting a tungsten-carbide masonry bit designed to cut through reinforced plaster and wood studs with surgical precision. She pressed the tip against the seam of the walnut paneling directly over the historical center mark Arthur had described to her years ago.

Whirrrrr-clack.

The drill bit bit into the wood with a sharp, angry whine, sending a fine cloud of golden sawdust swirling into the air. Elena kept her posture steady, her breathing controlled and rhythmic, ignoring the tense silence radiating from the doorway behind her. With a firm, downward push, she severed the first concealed mounting bracket. The walnut panel shifted slightly, groaning under the sudden stress.

“Elena, stop!” Mark yelled, taking a desperate step forward before stopping as Elena paused the drill and turned her head slightly over her shoulder, leveling a stern, unimpressed glare at him. He swallowed hard and stayed put.

Elena pulled the trigger again, driving the drill through the second and third brackets until the entire custom entertainment center shuddered with a dull, echoing thud. With a swift, coordinated heave, she pulled the heavy walnut paneling away from the wall. It fell forward with a loud crash against the hardwood floor, sending decorative books, ceramic vases, and decorative items shattering into pieces.

Behind the wreckage stood the heavy iron door of a recessed wall safe, its forest-green paint slightly faded, featuring a classic brass combination dial in the center.

Arthur stepped into the library, leaning heavily on his cane, looking down at the exposed safe with a nostalgic smile. “Well, I'll be. Exactly where your grandfather swore he left it.”
