Chapter 4: Dawn Inspections

The morning sun rose pale and anemic over the Sterling estate, casting long, dreary shadows across the frost-covered lawns. Clara was awake long before the first bell rang, her body aching from the damp chill of the servant's quarters. She dressed quickly in her clean grey uniform and adjusted her white lace cap, making sure every strand of hair was neatly tucked away. Today was the day the interior decorators and high-society wedding planners were scheduled to arrive, which meant the entire household would be walking on a razor's edge of nervous tension.
When Clara reached the main floor, the grand hallway was already a hive of frantic activity. Footmen in burgundy waistcoats were hurriedly unrolling heavy Persian carpets, while florists unloaded hundreds of white orchids flown in from the tropics. Evelyn stood in the center of the foyer, directing the placement of a massive crystal vase with sharp, imperious gestures. She wore a tailored morning suit of deep plum wool, looking as immaculate and unapproachable as ever. She caught sight of Clara out of the corner of her eye and motioned for her to approach with a flick of her gloved hand.
"Clara," Evelyn said, her voice dropping to a cold, dangerous whisper as the girl drew near. "The bridal suite on the third floor requires immediate dusting. Do not touch the vanity items—they are antique French crystal and worth more than your entire family name. And keep out of Mr. Sterling's study. He is conducting private business this morning and does not wish to be disturbed under any circumstances." Clara nodded obediently, keeping her gaze lowered to the marble floor. "Yes, Madam," she murmured, her voice steady despite the knot of anxiety twisting in her stomach.
Ascending the grand staircase, Clara felt the atmosphere shift. The noise of the decorators faded away, replaced by a heavy, suffocating quiet. The third-floor hallway was lined with ancestral portraits, their painted eyes seeming to follow her every move. She reached the heavy oak door of the bridal suite and slipped inside. The room was breathtakingly vast, dominated by a towering four-poster bed draped in ivory silk. Sunlight poured through the tall arched windows, illuminating millions of dust motes dancing in the air.

As Clara began dusting the ornate mahogany mantelpiece, her eyes drifted toward the adjoining room—Julian’s private study. The door was cracked open just an inch. Drawn by an irresistible, dangerous curiosity, she crept toward the threshold and peeked inside. Julian was standing by his mahogany desk, speaking in a low, intense voice into a heavy black telephone receiver. "The transfer must be completed before the market opens on Monday," he was saying, his knuckles white as he gripped the desk. "I don't care about the board's objections. Use whatever leverage is necessary, but ensure the title deeds are signed over to my name alone."
Clara’s breath hitched in her throat, a faint sound that seemed deafening in the quiet room. Julian abruptly slammed the receiver down and spun around toward the door. Clara froze, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She stepped back into the shadows of the bridal suite just as Julian’s heavy footsteps approached the threshold. The handle began to turn, and the terrifying realization washed over her that if she was caught eavesdropping on his financial secrets, the consequences would be far worse than missed dinner or locked handcuffs.
