Chapter 13: A New Foundation

One month later, Clara unlocked the front door of a modest, sunlit two-bedroom apartment in Queen Anne. The hardwood floors gleamed in the afternoon light, and through the large living room windows, the iconic silhouette of the Space Needle rose against a clear blue Seattle sky. There were no smart-home surveillance panels, no biometric locks on the refrigerator, and no critical voices echoing down the hallway.

In the kitchen, a steaming pot of vegetable soup simmered peacefully on the stove, filling the apartment with the comforting aroma of garlic, carrots, and fresh herbs. Lily, now running steadily on her own two feet, chased a brightly colored squeaky toy across the living room rug, her laughter ringing out pure and uninhibited.

Clara walked into the kitchen, wearing a comfortable blue button-down shirt that bore no resemblance to the stiff satin of the past, though the gold hoop earrings still caught the light as she moved. She felt a profound sense of physical and emotional lightness. Her work at Aura Interiors was thriving; Julianne had already promoted her to lead designer on a commercial loft project in Pioneer Square. The funds from the trust audit were safely deposited in an independent bank account bearing only her name.

There were moments, late at night when the city quieted down, when the ghost of her mother’s voice still flickered at the edge of her memory—whispering doubts, criticizing her choices, predicting failure. But she had learned to recognize those whispers for what they were: the dying echoes of a prison cell she had finally escaped.

The doorbell chimed softly. Clara walked over and opened it to find Agent Vance standing on the porch, holding a small bouquet of yellow daisies. He smiled warmly, handing them to her.

“Just checking in on the new place,” Vance said, stepping inside to watch Lily toddle over with the squeaky toy. “Looks like you’ve made it a home.”

“It is a home,” Clara said, placing the daisies in a glass vase on the kitchen counter. “No guards, no rations, no rules except our own.”
