Chapter 5: Legal Tripwires

Stephanie’s confidence was not entirely unfounded. Later that afternoon, a sleek black sedan pulled up to the curb, and a sharp-looking attorney stepped out, walking briskly up the driveway. Stephanie had wasted no time calling her legal counsel, weaponizing the marriage contract and the joint ownership status she had surreptitiously maneuvered into the property deeds during David’s vulnerable months of mourning. David met them at the front door, blocking the entryway with a rigid stance, refusing to let the lawyer cross the threshold without a formal court order. Chloe watched from the landing of the stairs, her heart pounding against her ribs as she observed the cold precision of legal warfare.

The attorney, a man with slicked-back hair and an unapologetic smirk, calmly explained that Stephanie held significant legal leverage over the suburban property. Because David had signed various financial and property transfer documents without thorough legal review while grieving, Stephanie’s name was deeply entrenched in the deed. David’s face drained of color as the reality of his profound negligence set in. He looked back at Chloe with deep remorse, realizing that his attempt to shield his daughter had inadvertently handed their sanctuary over to an opportunistic interloper.

Stephanie appeared behind her lawyer, wearing her blue cardigan once more, her posture dripping with smug vindication. She whispered something to the attorney before stepping forward to address David and Chloe directly. She announced that if anyone was going to leave the house, it certainly wouldn't be her. She proposed a grim compromise: Chloe could stay, but she would have to abide by strict household rules dictated entirely by Stephanie, effectively turning the teenager into an unpaid servant in her own home. David opened his mouth to unleash a torrent of fury, but Chloe stepped down the stairs, placing a calming hand on her father’s forearm.

Chloe looked directly into Stephanie’s calculating eyes, refusing to cower or show fear. She calmly told the lawyer and Stephanie that forged signatures and coerced signatures held no weight in a court of forensic document examination, a field in which her late mother’s brother—her uncle Mark—happened to be an expert. The attorney’s smug smirk faltered instantly, and Stephanie’s eyes widened in sudden panic. Uncle Mark, who lived two states away and had been quietly gathering evidence for months, was already en route. The legal tripwire Stephanie had set was suddenly pointing straight back at her.
