Chapter 4

The nurse’s visit took up most of the morning, filled with the rustle of medical files, the click of pill organizers snapping shut, and a battery of polite, repetitive questions that left Arthur visibly drained. By noon, the house had returned to a fragile silence. Nurse Jenkins had departed with a polite nod, leaving behind a revised medication schedule and an extra box of sterile gloves that Clara immediately stored in the hall closet.

Elena sat in the living room, paging through a magazine she wasn't really reading. Across from her, Arthur sat in the armchair by the window, staring out at the empty street. His hands rested limply on his knees, palms up, as if waiting for someone to place something inside them.

The sound of a car door slamming outside broke the stillness. Arthur’s head jerked up instantly, a sudden alertness flashing in his eyes.

“Is that your brother?” Arthur asked, his voice sharp with sudden hope. “Is David here?”

Elena’s heart skipped a beat. David lived three states away and hadn't visited since Thanksgiving, caught up in the relentless machinery of his own corporate life. “No, Arthur, it’s just the mail carrier,” she said softly, keeping her voice even and calm.

“He said he was coming,” Arthur insisted, standing up with an abruptness that made Elena flinch. He walked toward the front hallway with a determined stride, completely defying the slow, cautious movements Clara had insisted upon.

Elena stood quickly to follow him, but before she could reach the archway, Arthur’s hand was already on the brass doorknob. He turned it, pulling the heavy wood inward.

A young delivery man—the same one from yesterday, wearing the blue polo shirt—was standing on the porch holding a small padded envelope. He froze, blinking in surprise at the sudden appearance of an elderly man with wide, frantic eyes.

“Package for… um, resident,” the young man stammered, holding out the mailer.

Arthur stared at him blankly, the brief surge of adrenaline already draining out of him, leaving him stranded in a maze of confusion. “Who are you?” Arthur whispered, his hand trembling as it gripped the edge of the doorframe. “Where are my keys?”

Before the delivery driver could respond, Clara appeared from the kitchen, moving with practiced efficiency. She stepped between Arthur and the open door, taking the padded envelope from the courier with a polite, practiced smile.

“Thank you so much. Have a wonderful day,” Clara said smoothly, easing the heavy door shut until the latch clicked securely into place. She slid the deadbolt home with a sharp, metallic thud that echoed loudly in the quiet foyer.

Arthur stood there for a second, staring at the locked door as if the metal bolt were a physical barrier keeping him from a life he desperately missed. Then, his shoulders slumped. Without a word, he turned around and walked slowly back toward his bedroom, his feet dragging slightly against the hardwood.
