Chapter 15: The Empty House and the Clean Slate

The sun had climbed high into the sky by the time Viktor reached the front steps of the mansion. The front door stood wide open, letting the crisp autumn wind sweep through the grand foyer, scattering dust motes across the polished parquet floors.

Inside, Eleanor was waiting by the foot of the grand staircase, holding a small leather suitcase and her heavy winter coat. She looked around the cavernous, echoing hall, realizing that the empire she had helped build and defend with such merciless cruelty was now nothing more than an empty shell of brick and wood.

"They've seized the corporate accounts," Eleanor said quietly as Viktor approached. "The state prosecutor is at the county line taking inventory. By tomorrow, this house will be auctioned off to settle the debts."

"Let them take it," Viktor replied, his voice calm, steady, and entirely free of regret. He reached out and took Eleanor’s suitcase in his left hand, offering his right arm to the old woman.

Together, the last two residents of the Vance estate walked out the front doors, down the grand stone steps, and past the open iron gates for the very last time. Viktor did not lock the gates behind them; he left them wide open to the wind, the rain, and the world outside.

Down in the valley, far beyond the reach of the iron mines and the secret ledgers, a little boy with messy blond hair and bright blue eyes was sitting at a sunlit wooden kitchen table, eating a warm breakfast with people who loved him, while a small name card sat discarded and forgotten in the bottom of a gray trash bin, lost to history forever. The house of broken plates was silent at last, and the long, dark winter of the Vance family had finally come to an end.
