Chapter 10

Armed with a new sense of purpose, Julian left the financial district behind before the afternoon trading session even concluded. He drove his car downtown, steering away from the gleaming glass towers of Midtown toward the older, quieter residential streets of Queens where the urban landscape felt more human and grounded. He had obtained Clara’s forwarding address through a discreet inquiry with the hotel’s human resources department before they could shred her employment file—a small abuse of corporate privilege that he justified as a matter of urgent personal necessity.
He parked his car two blocks away from a modest, weather-beaten apartment building with peeling green paint on the wooden porch rails. The autumn air carried the scent of fallen leaves and distant rain as he walked up the cracked concrete steps, his expensive leather shoes clicking against the worn stairs. His heart hammered against his ribs with a nervous intensity he had not felt since his first corporate job interview. He stood before apartment 3B, taking a deep, steadying breath before raising his hand and rapping his knuckles softly against the wooden door.

The wait felt endless. Muted sounds of a television news broadcast drifted from behind the thin panels before the lock clicked and the door swung open a few inches, held securely by a rusted chain. Clara’s face appeared in the narrow gap, her eyes registering immediate surprise and a flash of wariness as she recognized her uninvited visitor. She did not open the door immediately, reminding him through her posture that she owed him nothing and held all the leverage in this quiet, intimate confrontation.
Julian spoke quickly, before she could shut the door in his face. He did not come with grand promises or a checkbook to buy his way out of guilt; he came simply to ask for a chance to explain himself properly, away from the glittering hotel corridors and the sterile diner booths. He told her that he was walking away from Victoria, from the penthouse, and from the corporate empire built on a foundation of lies. Clara looked at him through the narrow gap, searching his face for any trace of the ambitious stranger who had abandoned her years ago, before finally sliding the chain free and pulling the door open.
